Have you ever heard the word Leptospirosis? Maybe you heard it in one of our exam rooms as we discussed its recent upgrade to “core” vaccine. 💉

Previously, lepto was considered a “lifestyle” vaccine but recent studies show that there are more and more cases even in locations where you would expect your pet to be less at risk. No longer is this a concern for just rural and wooded areas.🦠

Lepto is a dangerous, sometimes fatal, and zoonotic disease (zoonotic means it can spread to humans!) contracted from the urine of wildlife and livestock. 🌳🌲🦝🦌🐻🌲🌳

Our dogs are at risk when they ingest water from runoff or puddles that have become infected 💧🚱

August is Itchy Pet Month and we are dedicating it to our itchy girl Penny 🩷

Itching and skin issues are a common symptom of allergies in pets and unfortunately Penny has dealt with Floridian Allergies🏝️ just like many of us. Penny has been on a journey to comfortable skin and our doctors have worked hard to find a regiment that works for her.

Itching often takes a multifaceted approach to solve. Often we have to take in to account a pet’s diet, their environment, and even their genes to determine the best way to treat them. Here in the sunshine state allergic itch is extremely common.

Luckily, modern medicine has given us plenty of options to help you find what works for you anf your pet. Penny has found relief with a once monthly injection called Cytopoint and oral medications as needed such as Apoquel.

🩷Penny is looking for a forever home to help us continue to provide her anti itch treatments with the added comfort of a warm lap to snuggle in. We love having Penny live with us but we know that she would love to retire with a loving family.🩷

Are you my Furever family? My name is ✨LILA✨. I am about 5-6yrs old, and I’ve been spayed. I was raised in a single cat household, but my previous owner is needing to rehome me due to changing circumstances. I am a very friendly adult cat. I love to be petted!

In my past I have had a couple episodes of stress related urinary pain during large life changes. Due to this I have been doing well on medication and urinary food. I have had updated radiographs, vaccines, and blood work this past week and got a clean bill of health from my Doctor.

I have made tons of friends at Lake Emma but I am looking forward to going to my furever home and being back in someone’s lap to snuggle with. We think I would do best in a quiet home where I could be the only pet or with a housemate who is just as mild mannered as me. This week our team celebrated AAHA Day internally. To be accredited by the Animal Hospital Association of America is an achievement we are honored to acknowledge each year. However, to have our beloved clients take time to remember and celebrate with us is an even greater feeling. 💙Where were you born and raised? How long have you lived in Florida?
I was born and raised in Florida and I've been here all my life

💙Where did you go to school?
I've graduated Jones highschool on honor roll and was apart of Beta club a high academic program). I want to start school soon to pursue my future career.

💙 Any hobbies?
Watching tv, hanging with family and friends, going swimming, listening to music, bike riding, enjoying nature.

I live with my Dad, mom, brother, and sister. I am the youngest and I love my family very much. I have two dogs Laila and coconut. Laila is a pitbull mix and coconut is a Chihuahua mix.

💙Why did you decided to work in the veterinary field?
I always had a love for animals and I wanted to turn that love and passion into a career. Since I was little I always said I wanted to be a veterinarian.

MEET Josh🐾🇵🇷

💙Where were you born and raised? How long have you lived in Florida?
I was raised in Puerto Rico. I have lived in Florida for 9 years.

💙Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Freedom High School and am currently attending Valencia College and Penn Foster. At Valencia, I am pursuing an Associate degree in Biochemical Sciences. After completing my degree, I plan to apply to the University of Central Florida to begin working toward my pre veterinary studies.

💙Do you have any hobbies, interests or talents? My hobbies are watching movies and playing pickleball.

💙Would you like to say anything about your family or pets?
I live with my mom, who has been the most influential person in my life. She has always supported me and encouraged me to pursue my goals. The rest of my family lives in Puerto Rico, and they continue to be an important part of my life as well. I also have a 9 year old cat who is my best friend and has played a big role in my love of animals.

💙Why did you choose Vet Med?
I decided to work in the veterinary field from a very young age because l have always shown a strong interest in animals and their well being. Over time, that interest grew into a passion for helping care for and improve the lives of animals. I officially began my journey in 2022 as a volunteer at a veterinary clinic, where l gained hands on experience and confirmed my desire to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
