🐾 Today we had two private training sessions at Lowe’s with our two puppy clients, Sky and Yuki. Both dogs are working on their leash training skills while working around distractions in public. Both dogs have shown progress in their training, but no dog is ever perfect so they will have to keep up with their training as they get older.

Working in public areas such as Lowe’s, Home Depot or other pet friendly places, is a good way to socialize and desensitize your dog to certain noises, smells, people and other dogs.

Socialization doesn’t necessarily mean interacting close-up with people or dogs, but it teaches them how to remain calm while being near others.

🐾 I am back doing Drop In Visits for George and Reba who were a bonded pair from the Humane Society. It has been quite a while since I have seen them last and they have a lot of trust issues with new people, so I am taking it slow today to let them get used to me. I will be back every day this week to do Drop In Visits for them so hopefully by the end of this week, they show a little bit more progress in trusting me.

When working with shelter dogs who have had trust issues with people, you have to take it slow and pretty much ignore them until they are willing to come up to you to get attention. It may take awhile for them to open up, but if you rush an interaction, it could make the dog react negatively and turn into a bite risk.

If you need help with a nervous or reactive dog, or if you need a pet sitter to do Drop In Visits, message us or text us at 402-209-2268 🐾

🐾 Today is Nail Trim day for Loki! For anyone who hasn’t seen his previous videos, Loki is my 9 year old mixed breed who has never done well with nail trims and has had previous trauma from a grooming salon many years ago.

For over a year now, we have been muzzle training and it has helped tremendously with doing his nails. For this process, I put peanut butter on the muzzle to distract him long enough for me to clip one or two nails. When he pulls back, I don’t fight him. I calm him down and distract him with more peanut butter. This may take an hour (give or take), but it allows him the time to calm himself in order to safely and effectively get the job done.

Some dogs need time to get used to nail trims or other grooming needs, but muzzle training will help protect them, as well as the groomer/owner. If you need help with muzzle training, message or text us at 402-209-2268. 🐾

🐾 When practicing the place command, start by using their favorite bed, rug, or even their kennel. In this video, we used a small platform as our place object.

1. First, get them used to stepping up onto the platform (or onto the bed/rug). If using a kennel, get them used to going inside by tossing treats to lure them in.

2. Once they are familiar with the object used for the place command, lure them fully onto the place object by putting all four paws onto the object and give the “sit” command while using treats.

3. Once they get used to the “sit” command on the place object, then teach them the “down” command the same way as the step before. (Some dogs may prefer the “down” position as it is a more comfortable position)

4. Many trainers use an “implied stay” during this command (meaning the “place” command automatically requires them to stay on the place object until released). Because of this, you must use a release command to tell them when they can leave the “place”. Try to use “Free” or another simple word for your release command. Avoid using the “okay” word as this is a word people often use in every day conversations and we don’t want to confuse the dog.

Teaching any new command or learning a new skill takes time and patience. Learning new skills not only helps the dog grow their confidence and build your relationship, but it also helps keeps them mentally engaged.

🐾 Gunner, the 140lb Great Pyrenees, had his first massage therapy session with me today! Gunner is 7 years old and like many senior pets, they often times will have arthritis or have some mobility difficulties.

Pet Massage Therapy is a great resource for pet owners to help their pets relieve stress, improve mobility, relieve pain, and more. Just like us humans, pets sometimes need a little extra attention to help heal injuries, or even just as a relaxing distraction.

While this is a new service we are providing for our amazing pet community, we are offering 45 minute long sessions for only $35. If you are interested in Pet Massage Therapy sessions, message us or text us at 402-209-2268 to schedule a consultation! 🐾

🐾 Not all training sessions go perfectly. Just ask Blitzen. 😂

Blitzen has worked on his agility skills for a year but is definitely not winning any titles. Even though he’s not a good fit for agility shows, it’s still a good skill to practice to help keep him physically and mentally engaged.

We like to share the wins during our training sessions, but the fails are just as important to show that no dog is perfect!

🐾 Today we worked with Yuki, who has learned so many new skills and positive behaviors, but is starting to go through a regression with her training. This is often common with dogs around one year old as they are going through hormonal changes as well as brain development.

It is important to remember to work on their training in 10 to 15 minute intervals up to 30 minutes each day. This timeframe allows them the opportunity to remember what they were taught, but also keeping it nice and short to make sure they don’t get overwhelmed.

This age can be a frustrating time for many pet owners so remember, practice and patience is key. If you need help with teaching your dog new commands or need help with problem behaviors, message us or text us at 402-209-2268!🐾

🐾 Sky, the 5 month old doodle, is doing a 12 week training program with us to ensure she learns all of the basic commands, leash training, redirecting problem behaviors and learning different mental enrichment activities. She has learned a lot so far and we hope to see even more amazing progress as she completes the last few weeks of her training.

🐾 When teaching door manners, it’s important to practice as often as you can and remember to have patience. When working with a puppy, you will need to repeat the steps many times in order for them to learn what it is you’re asking them to do.

🐾 Start by having them go into a “SIT” and slowly open the door. If they get up from the sit position before the door fully opens, shut the door and repeat that first step. Once they learn to stay sitting for the whole duration of opening the door, they will need to learn when they CAN get up to greet the person at the door. When teaching them when to get up from the sit or down position, you need to introduce the “FREE“ command. That is going to release them from the position you asked them to be in.

🐾 Teaching puppies new skills can definitely be frustrating as it takes a lot of repetition for them to learn the necessary skills. If you need help teaching your puppy basic commands, leash training, door manners, or even redirecting problem behaviors, message us or text us at 402-209-2268! 🐾
