What is rabies and why is it important to be vaccinated?💉🦠

Rabies is a viral illness that can affect your pet's central nervous system🧠. This virus can also be transmitted to humans👩🏼👨🏽‍🦱 through a bite😬 or scratch from an infected animal🦝🦨🦇. Vaccination to protect pets against rabies is required by law in New York State and many others🗺.

Symptoms of a rabies infection can include fearfulness🙈, aggression😡, difficulty swallowing and paralysis💀. Once symptoms appear there is unfortunately no treatment that can be done😢. This is why it is important to keep your pet up to date with this vaccine💉👍🏻.

This month📅 highlights the importance of routine vaccinations for your pets 🐶🐱❤️ These vaccines 💉 should be kept up to date to help your pets stay healthy ✅🐩.

Some of these diseases can be life threatening😵. Its best to be proactive and vaccinate💉 to prevent these sicknesses rather than having to treat them🩻🩺👩🏼‍⚕️.

Stay tuned 📺 for important vaccination information throughout the month‼️ A few vaccines we will be featuring are Distemper/Parvo🤒, FVRCP🙀, Bordetella 😷 and Rabies🥴‼️

Today is a day to celebrate 🥳 🎉 all the mixed breeds out there! 😍🐾 This day is a reminder to people that there are many mixed-breed ❤️ dogs sitting in shelters 😭 that need a good loving home 💗🏡🥰. We embrace and celebrate these mixed pups at Fitzgerald Veterinary! 🤩💖

✨Fun Fact Friday✨

Did you know that more dogs go missing on July 4th 🎇 than any other day of the year? This is July is National Pet Loss Prevention Month 😔🐶

Here are some actions to help protect your pets from getting lost
1. Do not leave your pet unattended when outdoors🌳🏞
2. Be sure your pet has a collar with an ID tag that has your contact 🪪information
3. Microchip your animals and make sure they are registered 👍🐕🐈
4. Secure your backyard and home 🏡
5. Teach commands like come and stay 🤩
6. Leash walk your dogs🐕‍🦺
7. Keep your dogs in a carrier/crate or seatbelted when traveling in a vehicle.🚗🦮

If your pet does become lost, take action immediately. ‼️ Notify your local animal shelter and animal hospitals. 🏥You can also use their photo to make posters and check with your neighbors.🏘

Cold laser therapy is a non invasion treatment that uses light to promote cell regeneration.

It has a multitude of benefits including pain management, accelerated wound healing, treatment of infections, and post surgical recovery.

Tomorrow we will be cheering 📣 for Dr. Fitzgerald and Roger, her Miniture Pinscher ,🐾 as they compete in the Westminster Kennel Club Master Agility Championships🏆 at the US Tennis Center🎾 in Flushing Medow.

They will be competing with the top agility teams in the country🙌🏼🥇. We are very proud of them and we wish the the best of luck!🍀😍🧡

We would like to welcome Sonny and Kobe to Fitzgerald Veterinary!😍🫶🏼🏥 They are 15 week old shih tzu puppies🐾 that are two peas in a pod!🤗 It was great seeing them for their new puppy check up👩🏼‍⚕️🩺🐶.

It is important to always have your new puppy's🐕🐕‍🦺🦮 examined by your veterinarian👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️. They should be kept up to date on vaccines💉 and have a full physical check up🩺 to ensure they are free of infections and disease🤒🤧.

DEET is a chemical compound 👩‍🔬 called N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. It is a common ingredient used in many insect repellents to protect humans👫 from mosquitos 🦟, ticks, fleas, chiggers and other biting insects😬.

While the thought of spraying your pet with insect repellents 🦟 may sound tempting, this can lead to serious health concerns 🚫. According to the ASPCA, using DEET can cause neuological problems 🧠 such as tremors, seizures and even death ☠️!

It is best to stick to the veterinary approved 👩🏼‍⚕️✅ flea and tick repellents such as collars, chewable pills 💊 or topical products. If you have any questions regarding flea and tick products please contact our office during business hours☎️📞📲
