Even CAS that tend to stay closer to home, still need fencing in the vast majority of cases. Hobby farms and homesteading usually have much less acreage than true production/working ranches. So, keep your dog safe and invest in a fence.
I see so many posts from people who want an LGD, but they don’t have a fence. Here at Aegis Guardians, that’s a deal breaker. No fence, no dog! I’ll explain why this is so important.
These dogs have been bred for thousands of years to work open range on the high steppes of Turkey. They bond with and stay close to the flock, but when the wolves come snooping around they pursue them until they are no longer deemed a threat to the flock. What does this mean for us ranchers in America? Well, your fence or your property line is a mere suggestion to a dog. Their instinct is to pursue a threat well beyond their territory. This is not the same as wandering, this is just the dog doing exactly what it’s been expected to do for hundreds of generations.
Having a secure fence is a critical part of keeping your dog SAFE. Without a secure, physical boundary, you cannot ensure your dog stays on your property. In many places, dogs wandering “at large” and deemed a threat can be legally put down by a landowner. Even if your dog is just doing its job, if someone else feels it’s a threat— that can lead to tragedy.
There’s a lot of new collar systems that some people use as a boundary system. I don’t trust these for a few reasons. The thick double coat often prevents good contact for a proper correction. The tight collar can lead to hot spots, especially if moisture gets trapped underneath. Exceptionally motivated dogs can learn to run through the boundary, take the shock, and then enjoy their freedom. Batteries die. Computers glitch. At the end of the day, the most reliable option is a physical fence.
The most important thing to us as breeders is the safety and well being of our dogs. There is no amount of money that can compensate for that! 💚

Edited to add: I’m getting a lot of comments from people who prefer to use electric collar systems. That’s fine, to each their own, and if it works for you— that’s great. However, I do still require anyone getting one of my dogs to have a secure physical fence. I’ve shared my reasoning and if you disagree, you are welcome to get your next LGD from someone else 😁
