Last weeks recap! Had a good session with Nero working on loosening him through his back and shoulders. Flynn enjoyed his preventative maintenance massage with the focus on making sure he is comfortably moving through his body. Indy didn’t miss out on the pampering either! This old guy really got into his massage - almost falling asleep! Massage is a great way to help your horse relax and recover after a vigorous workout.

Here are two of my favorite applications for back support. The first focuses more on a point of pain or soreness. This taping makes the horse more aware of its back while simultaneously lifting and supporting the area of discomfort. The second application is also intended to bring awareness to the back but also support the longissimus Dorsi muscle and the sacroiliac joint. I like to use this on horses who struggle to use their backs during exercise.

In addition to massage work, kinesiology tape is a great addition to help promote blood flow and healing. After working on this horse, who I found to have tight shoulders, I used this method to help support and lift the tissues around the shoulders and provide relief. I have been working with kinesiology tape over the last year and have done some training with RockTape. This particular horse suffers from chronic inflammation in both pasterns and coronary bands. This style of taping, via the placement of the finger-like strips, helps reduce inflammation and increase blood flow. Our hope is to reduce the inflammation for improved flexibility in the pastern and improve blood flow for faster hoof growth.

Had a great session with this guy last night! He has come a long way in the last two weeks. I started out with just 10 minute sessions to try to get him to understand body work and learn to relax. Even so I had to be very light with him because his muscles were so tense. Most of the time I just laid my hands on him and did very light trigger point work. Last night I was finally able to apply more pressure to the trigger point work and get a bigger release! The whole time he staying relaxed and in the zone.
