Your dog isn’t staring at their trigger because they’re trying to be obstinate, disobedient, stubborn or otherwise.
They’re usually staring and unable to look away because they feel scared or threatened.
Imagine a black widow on your wall or a venomous snake in the grass next to you. You’d likely want to keep your eye on that threat - especially if you’re being forced to stay in its vicinity.
Taking your eyes off of something that could suddenly get closer or cause you harm is not something easily done when afraid!
We use simple pattern games to help dogs feel safe and comfortable in the presence of their triggers. The pattern game featured here is Leslie McDevitt’s Up Down Game. The dog in this video would typically be hard staring, barking, lunging, and pulling toward the trigger. But thanks to Up Down Game he’s able to:
• Observe the trigger calmly
• Look away from the trigger and at his parent when he’s ready (without prompting)
• Turn his back on the trigger
• Continue on his walk without a reaction
We know how stressful and difficult it can be to work through reactivity. Rest assured, we have so many ways to help. If you want to work with us, start with our Reactive Rover Recovery Class and then progress to private coaching (virtual or in person depending on your location). 🐾
