Who doesn’t love a mini? How about three minis!! This month OC Equine is happy to shine a BIG spotlight on Katy, Willow and Balthazar for our Patient Spotlight Series for the month of May. This adorable trio is owned by the Anneliese School located in Laguna Beach, CA where they are doted on by students, staff and teachers.

Starting with the queen, Katy, who is just shy of 31 years old, is the matriarch of the campus. This mighty paint miniature horse, with a mean back left kick, is described to be “strong, stubborn and going to outlive us all.” For the past several years Katy has been expertly managed by her care team, OC Equine, and board certified ophthalmologist Dr. Dubin from Eye Care for Animals for a severe case of glaucoma and chronic corneal disease.

Next up, is the handsome and very charming Willow. Nicknamed “Fabio”, because of his fabulous blond locks and handsome good looks. Willow is a 21-year-old chestnut who loves to get your attention by pawing on the ground with his hoof in hopes of you feeding him his favorite treat of carrots, apples and grape leaves. Earlier this year, Willow suffered a minor colic episode yet recovered nicely due to Dr Botello’s speedy assessment and emergency care. Willow was soon back to daily turn outs and charming the Anneliese staff.

Finally, the BIG guy, Balthazar. Known for his cool guy demeanor and laid-back attitude, this 15-year-old paint is the baby of the herd. According to the school, Balthazar, “struts his stuff across the campus walking on his own timeline as if he intends to be fashionably late.” This Mama’s Boy will do just about anything for carrots, apples, and grape leaves.

Thank you to The Anneliese Schools for trusting OC Equine to care for your beloved minis. We love being part of their herd!

Buying a horse is exciting - and a pre-purchase exam is one of the best ways to make an informed decision.

It’s more than just watching them jog- from assessing goals and expectations, evaluating the heart, eyes, teeth, to reviewing images and bloodwork- we design it to give buyers a clearer picture of the horse in front of them.

Spring has sprung, and OC Equine is thrilled to spotlight the ever-springy (and squealy!) Rocco as our April Patient Spotlight.
Rocco is a 17-year-old chestnut Selle Français, nicknamed “The Mayor” for the way he oversees his herd at Coto de Caza Equestrian Center. A natural politician, Rocco loves greeting any horse, dog, and human who passes by.

Want to win him over instantly? Stop by with his favorite treats - Cheese Puffs and A to Z cookies. When he’s not working the crowd, Rocco is happiest doing what he loves most: jumping and lunging, often squealing with joy.

When his owner noticed some swelling in his left front leg she called us immediately for an evaluation. Dr. Fertig expertly diagnosed not one, but two tendon injuries. A complete recovery has been made for Rocco thanks to Dr. Fertig’s prompt diagnosis, high level treatment, and careful rehabilitation plan. Rocco is back to his usual routine of happily greeting his loyal constituents and squealing with delight over his favorite jumps.

We are so excited to welcome Sarah to our team!

Sarah was born in central California with a love of horses. Though her parents hoped she would outgrow it, her love for horses only grew more as she got older. Sarah started riding horses in high school competing on an equestrian drill team. She worked at a busy equine practice in Utah for 6 years before joining OC Equine this year.

Sarah spends her free time riding her horse Re*****on, and juggling her wannabe ranch dog, Cashew the goldendoodle.

Next time you see Sarah in the field with our doctors give her a warm welcome!

Everyone smile and wish Dr. Hunter a very Happy Birthday!!  ☘️

They say everyone searches for a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow… but we’re pretty sure we found ours in Dr. Hunter.

Our magical little leprechaun has the biggest heart, endless compassion for every horse she meets, and the kind of dedication that makes both horses and humans adore her.

Wishing you a birthday full of luck, laughter, and maybe a little extra green today! 🍀🐴

🌟 March Patient of the Month: Phoenix 🌟

Meet Phoenix, a 25-year-old chestnut Arabian gelding who is truly part of the family. He’s brought them so much joy from winning ribbons at horse shows last year to getting all dressed up for the Halloween party at the barn. 🧡

🥕 Favorite treats: Carrots & apple smacks
😆 Funny trait: He moves his lower lip like he’s mumbling… like he’s always got something to say.

🩺 Case Spotlight:
After having repeated bouts of colic this year, Dr. Botello recommended checking Phoenix for ulcers — and she was spot on. Phoenix had grade 4 gastric ulcers.
After completing the 28-day treatment protocol, he was re-scoped and improved dramatically — from grade 4 to grade 1! 🙌

His owner shared:
“We rescued Phoenix almost four years ago and he has brought us all so much joy. He is truly part of our family… We are so happy to be part of the OC Equine family and are grateful for the care Phoenix gets from Dr. Botello and Dr. DeBusk.”

We love seeing horses like Phoenix thrive and are grateful to be part of his journey. 💙

💜 International Women’s Day 💜

Equine veterinary medicine is one of the most demanding paths in veterinary medicine.
• Only ~1–2% of veterinary graduates enter equine practice• Nearly 50% leave the field within their first 5 years• And many experienced equine veterinarians are approaching retirement

Which makes the veterinarians who choose to stay… exceptional.

Supporting this profession means more than appreciation. It means respecting and valuing veterinarians’ time, knowledge, and expertise, so the people who dedicate their lives to caring for horses can continue doing the work they love.

✨ Happy International Women’s Day to the women of OC Equine helping carry equine veterinary medicine forward.✨

🔎 Spot the fake 🔎

We recently came across a scary find. A horse owner asked us about treating their horse with Ulcergard and showed us their “supply.”

Upon inspection Dr. Botello and our assistant, Gina, noticed the fake product had several packaging discrepancies and the contents smelled like spoiled applesauce.

The counterfeit product was purchased from a popular global online retailer with a fake “storefront” posing as the original producers of Ulcergard (Merial) before the company was purchased by Boehringer Ingelheim in 2017. We have reported this to BI for them to address on a larger scale.

Please let this serve as a cautionary tale for purchasing medications from a third party!

If you purchase your medications directly from us, or our online pharmacy, we assure you we aren’t selling anything fake 🙅🏻‍♀️

This month, we are thrilled to spotlight a very special (and always entertaining!) patient — Jag.

Jag is a 22-year-old chestnut Quarter Horse gelding who is full of personality. His owner, Lori, shares that after a long ride, one of Jag’s favorite things to do is “dunk his entire head in the water and splash out the water!”

Jag is always up for an adventure — from camping trips and beach rides to IRC rides. No matter where he goes, he brings fun and amusement to every trail. Lori especially loves how he makes each ride memorable with his playful spirit. And of course, no adventure is complete without his favorite treats: carrots, watermelon rinds, and apples!

Jag has been a patient of OC Equine for the last 10 years. His gentle demeanor paired with his mom’s kindness make this pair a staff favorite. Recently, we were pleased to relieve Jag’s hoof abscess, and he’ll soon be back where he belongs — out on the trails.

Congratulations, Jag, on being our February Patient Spotlight!
Thank you for being such a wonderful patient. We love having you as part of the OC Equine family!
