You never realize how deeply you love someone until the silence feels louder than any bark ever could.
Kristin Hartness and her partner, Jay Yontz, were going about their usual afternoon at Ziggy’s Refuge Farm Sanctuary when they noticed something was terribly wrong. Their senior dog, Wh**ey — who had never left their side since they rescued him — was nowhere to be found. On a sprawling 110-acre farm with over a hundred rescued animals, it took a moment to notice. But once they did, panic set in fast.
They searched the barns, the pastures, every hidden corner. Nothing. Kristin’s heart raced as she remembered what Wh**ey had been through before they found him — a lonely guardian dog who once slept in the barn, terrified of human touch. They had spent years showing him what love felt like, and now he was gone.
Then she heard it. A faint, wet sound. Not a bark. Just a soft squish in the distance.
Following it, she called Jay to hurry. What they found stopped them cold.
Wh**ey had fallen into a deep mud pit hidden near one of the pastures. His legs were trapped. He was exhausted, shivering, barely able to lift his head. Kristin dropped to her knees, reaching for him, but she couldn’t pull him out alone.
Jay didn’t hesitate. He waded into the muck and together, they lifted their boy to safety.
When Wh**ey’s paws hit solid ground, he stood trembling, covered from nose to tail in mud — but alive. Kristin burst into tears as he wobbled toward her. They carried him inside, bathed him gently, and wrapped him in soft blankets. That night, his tail gave a slow, grateful wag before he drifted off to sleep, safe in the arms of the family he waited his whole life to find.
Now, Wh**ey still walks the farm like the quiet guardian he’s always been. The chickens gather near his feet. The pigs nudge him gently as he passes. Every animal seems to know how close they came to losing him.
Kristin puts it best: “Every morning we wake up and see his face, we’re reminded how lucky we are that he chose to stay.”
