🐾 Is Your Pet Scratching Their Ears? It Could Be Otitis Externa! 🐾

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons dogs and cats visit the vet. Otitis externa is an inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal, and it can make your pet very uncomfortable.

🔎 Signs to watch for:
• Frequent ear scratching or pawing
• Head shaking
• Redness or swelling of the ear canal
• Bad odor coming from the ears
• Dark discharge or wax buildup
• Sensitivity when the ears are touched

🐶🐱 What causes it?
Otitis externa can develop from allergies, moisture in the ears, ear mites, bacteria, yeast, or foreign material like grass seeds. Pets with floppy ears or pets that swim often may be at higher risk.

💡 Good news: With proper diagnosis and treatment, most ear infections clear up quickly! Your veterinarian may perform an ear exam, clean the ears, and prescribe medication to treat the infection AND underlying cause.

☎️ When to call us:
If you notice any signs of ear discomfort, don’t wait—early treatment helps prevent chronic ear problems.

📅How to prepare for your appointment:
Don't clean your pet's ears beforehand. We will need to collect a sample for an ear cytology, then we will clean them for you!
Bring any recently used cleaners or ear medications.

❤️ Healthy ears = a happier pet!

Did you know just one unneutered male cat can contribute to 400+ kittens in only 3 years?

Male cats don’t carry litters, which means they can breed with multiple females year-round. Those kittens grow up and reproduce in as little as 5–6 months, and the cycle continues.

Neutering one cat truly makes a difference.

Call 706-639-1988 to schedule at Main Street Veterinary Clinic.
