Incredibly sad news!

💔 I just learned of the passing of Laura Donaldson, and my heart is heavy.

Laura was one of the many people who had a profound impact on the journey Brutus and I have been on together.

Living with a sensitive dog can take you down a path you never expected to travel. There are moments of frustration, sadness, confusion, and loneliness. You question yourself, wonder what you're missing, and desperately want to understand the dog standing in front of you.

Along the way, there are people who help you see things differently. People who challenge what you thought you knew, open your eyes to new possibilities, and help you better understand the dog you love so much.

Laura was one of those people for me.

Brutus has changed my life in ways I never could have imagined, and the people who helped shape our journey will always hold a special place in my heart. What I learned along the way didn't just change my relationship with him. It helped shape the work I do today and the way I show up for other dogs and their humans.

I'm forever grateful for the people who helped me see Brutus for who he was, rather than simply seeing the behaviors that made life challenging.

Rest peacefully, Laura. Thank you for being part of our journey. ❤️

Finding an activity class where your reactive or sensitive dog is truly welcome (and not just tolerated) can feel almost impossible. Most dog sports or high-energy environments are crowded, loud, and stressful.

In K9 Thrills & Skills, we work together through a mix of agility, canine fitness, trick training, and dog parkour. Most of what your dog tells you isn't in a bark or a growl.

It's in the quiet stuff... how their body sits, how their eyes look, whether there's tension held in their bodies.

A dog who feels secure usually carries a relaxed posture, nothing braced or rigid.

Their ears sit in a natural position for their breed.
Their eyes look soft, no scrunching around the brow.
The mouth is either closed without tension or open in an easy pant.
The tail hangs relaxed rather than stiff or held high.

None of these on their own mean much. It's just a part of the whole picture that we have to pay attention to, especially when it comes to those reactive and anxious pups.

A relaxed tail with a tense mouth isn't the same story as a relaxed tail with soft eyes and loose shoulders. Every dog and every breed carries these signals a little differently, so it's about reading them for who they are, not checking one box and calling it done.

This is a huge part of what we work through inside Conquering Chaos, my 12-week course for reactive dog owners. So much of learning to live well with a dog who's misunderstood starts with learning their language first, before anything else.

You don't have to have known this already. You just have to start noticing it now.

Someone was mad that momma “abandoned” him so we had to go spend some quality time together (actually, momma needed to move after sitting for too many days).

Love being in nature with him. This hike is ALWAYS for him, never me. We go as far as he wants, as fast/slow as he wants, he picks the route. When the road splits, he makes the decision, not me.

We breath in the fresh air, leaves falling around us, just listening to nature.

7 states, 10 days and 19 hrs on the road yesterday 😩

That wasn’t the plan but happy to be home and in my own bed after family & friend time as well as the CANIS conference.

A lot to unpack, both my mind and the car, stay tuned for updates.

For now, I’m going to sit and enjoy being home with the pups.
