Cats and Dogs Forever Sanctuary
strives to give feral and companion cats and dogs with virtually no other options the best life possible in a clean, cage-free, loving environment. We don't have it in our budget to take in more fur kids in need of a safe place
Most of our animals are seniors and special needs with health issues and need regular veterinary care and medications.

A brief update on two of our toughest and cutest family members here at Cats and Dogs Forever Sanctuary.
😼❤️🐱❤️ Stormy❤️ has decided he is the senior medical supervisor around here. Whenever we administer sub-q fluids and medications to our more vulnerable kitties, Stormy is acting as a watchful guardian during their treatments and keeps a close eye on us, watching every move with a judgmental glare to make sure that we don't mess up.
Our Chantelle❤️ is, frankly, too good to be true. She is the ultimate cooperative patient. She is incredibly calm and cooperative during her necessary medical care, making the treatment process seamless for all of us. These two absolute legends had a rough life on the streets and survived some truly awful injuries from being shot several times. They've decided their main job now is running this sanctuary with a blend of intense supervision and angelic patience.
Want to support Stormy and Chantelle's care?
We need help with Stormy's senior medical supervisor salary, aka high-quality snacks.
For Chantelle, best patient in history, we need supplies like diapers, subq fluids, and medications.

This narrative recounts the journey of a feral cat named Stormy❤️ and his transformation from a state of trauma two years and eight months ago to becoming a cherished member of our family.
When Stormy first arrived on our property, he was an elderly, limping, and hungry street cat. We were able to humanely trap him and arranged for a comprehensive veterinary examination that same day, which included X-rays, blood tests, neutering, and vaccinations.
The initial assessment raised concerns regarding his right front leg, suggesting a potential amputation due to previous gunshot wounds that had shattered the elbow. Seeking a second opinion, we consulted our regular veterinarian. As an excellent surgeon, he determined that the bones had fused and were no longer causing Stormy pain. He advised against amputation, emphasizing the benefits of retaining the leg for an elderly cat of his size to maintain balance.
Our goal was to earn Stormy's trust and provide him with a safe, loving environment. While he immediately fit in with our other cats, it took time for him to trust our dogs. He initially exhibited protective behaviors toward his new feline friends, often standing guard and swatting at the dogs. However, our dogs remained patient, and with time, Stormy learned to trust them as well.

Cricket❤️ is currently receiving 50ml of subq fluids to help maintain the smoothness of her intestinal tract and to aid with defecation issues, which are a result of a re**al stricture. Additionally, she is on a regimen of stool softeners and Cisapride. We attempted to use Slippery Elm, but she found the taste unpalatable, and we are trying to minimize any stress for her.

Chantelle❤️ had her appointment with the internal medicine specialist.
Dr.S. was impressed that Chantelle's primary care vet had already performed the diagnostic workup she would have recommend for Chantelle's ionized hypercalcemia.
These included:
Diagnostic imaging: radiographs/x-rays of the chest and ultrasound the abdomen looking for evidence of cancerous processes - none were found.
Measurement of parathyroid hormone: screening for hyperparathyroidism - Chantelle does not have this condition.
Measurement of PTHrP: screening for a substance produced by some tumors that mimics parathyroid hormone - this was negative.
Dr.S. recommended switching Chantelle's diet to prescription food in an effort to get her ionized calcium level lower.
Chantelle is scheduled for a follow-up appointment in four weeks to recheck her bloodwork.

Chantelle❤️ came to us from Florida in June of 2020. She was rescued by our sanctuary after being shot multiple times, leaving her permanently paralyzed. Despite her condition, she has been a happy cat. She zooms around on her tushie, she climbs cat trees, and she loves to hunt bugs and lizards in the catio.
Due to the gunshot injuries, she has urinary and f***l incontinence.
She was born with renal dysplasia, diagnosed via ultrasound.
Renal dysplasia in cats is a birth defect where kidneys are small, deformed, and underdeveloped, leading to poor function and failure, causing symptoms like increased thirst/urination, lethargy, and weight loss.
Chantelle gets daily 100ml Lactated Ringers sub-q fluids to flush toxins and boost energy by supporting remaining kidney function.
Our latest health concerns are high calcium levels (hypercalcemia). She is going back Thursday to see her internal medicine specialist. Hopefully, we will get some answers and ways to help her. Ultrasound, x-rays, and specialist blood tests were inconclusive.⁰

Our warrior princess Cricket❤️ is getting fluids to help rehydrate her intestinal contents, making the stool softer and more pliable and allowing it to pass more easily through the narrow re**al passage. She is also on stool softener, slippery elm, and wet food only. The specialty surgeon recommended waiting with surgery. Cricket❤️ is tiny but mighty.😼 # 🐾💕

Our cute tripod, Lily❤️, came with a severely injured hind leg that needed to be amputated. Lily❤️ was a feral kitty; it took her years before she decided to like human touch. Nowadays, she sleeps in bed with one of us.
