Just some thoughts I’ve had this week and something I wish more dog owners knew when searching for a trainer... the easiest things to compare are often the least important things to compare.
Who can get you in tomorrow? Who has the lowest price? Who promises results the fastest? Who offers a guarantee? Who has the biggest facility, fanciest website, or best marketing?
Those things are easy to see.
What’s harder to see is what you’re actually purchasing when you hire an experienced professional.
You’re not just buying an hour of someone’s time or a certain number of days of training. You’re hiring the years of education and experience behind that time.
Experience changes what happens in a training session. Sometimes the value isn’t knowing how to do more. It’s knowing when to stop. When a dog needs a break. When to increase the challenge and when you’ve progressed too quickly. Recognizing the difference between a dog who doesn’t understand and one who is worried, frustrated, overstimulated, uncomfortable, or simply being asked for too much.
It’s knowing when the original plan isn’t working and having enough experience to change it.
And training dogs is only part of the job. Being able to train a dog and being able to teach a person how to successfully live and work with that dog are two different professional skills.
And perhaps most importantly:
Do I trust this person to make good decisions for my dog when I’m not standing there watching?
I’ve intentionally built a business that isn’t designed around training the maximum number of dogs in the shortest possible amount of time.
Sometimes that means our programs cost more. Sometimes it means there’s a wait. Sometimes I’ll tell you your goal will take longer than you hoped. Sometimes I’ll tell you a goal isn’t realistic for your particular dog. And sometimes I’ll tell you I’m not the right professional for what you need.
I’m okay with all of those things, too.
I’d rather build my business around being worth waiting for than around being the first trainer available.
We refuse to sacrifice quality for availability.
