🐾 “LEAVE IT” — IT’S MORE THAN JUST A TRICK.

“Leave it” is one of those commands that every dog should know because, in the right situation, it can literally keep your dog safe.

Teaching Leave It means teaching your dog:

➡️ That’s not yours.
➡️ Disengage from it.
➡️ Look to me instead.
➡️ Trust that I’ll guide you.

Think about all the situations where a solid “Leave It” can make a difference:

🐕 Food dropped on the floor
💊 Medication or something potentially toxic
🗑️ Trash on a walk
🐿️ Wildlife or other animals
🐶 Another dog they’re becoming too interested in
👟 Household items they shouldn’t pick up
🍗 Bones, wrappers, or mystery food outside
🚫 Anything that could potentially be dangerous

But there’s another reason I LOVE teaching this command…

Impulse control.

Dogs naturally want to investigate things that interest them. “Leave It” teaches them that they don’t have to act on every impulse.

See it. ➡️ Think about it. ➡️ Disengage. ➡️ Check back in with their handler.

THAT is a skill that carries over into so many other areas of training.

A reliable “Leave It” isn’t about constantly telling your dog NO.

It’s about teaching them to make a better choice — and rewarding them for choosing you. 💚

Start small. Make it achievable. Reward heavily. Then slowly increase the difficulty as your dog understands the concept.

Because the day you REALLY need your dog to “Leave It” shouldn’t be the day you realize they don’t understand what it means.

Sadie girl working in her place and stay! With me sitting on the couch! This is huge for any dog! Most of the time dogs will move to you when you sit down like it’s an open invitation to come snuggle and Sadie is proof that you can change those behaviors!
Teaching place and stay while you are on the couch builds boundaries and a better understanding of the house rules!

Bear is a hard case probably one of the hardest I have had in 2 years! But that doesn’t stop us from waking up everyday to give him all the time and training he needs!
He is very shy about everything constantly looking over his shoulders for danger!
We take every chance we get to show him the world isn’t out to get him he has one amazing loving momma who wants the best for him! So we are working daily to give him that as well!
