We are so grateful for the exceptional equine emergency care we have available in Central Oregon with Bend Equine Medical Center. Wickiup Animal Hospital is able to provide routine wellness care for our equine friends thanks to the emergency veterinarians at Bend Equine. See below their recommendations for equine emergency care preparedness.

A Note About Equine Emergency Care in Our Community

We are incredibly proud to provide emergency care for the horses of Central Oregon, and we are grateful for the trust our community places in us.

As the area’s only full-service equine referral hospital, our team provides emergency care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We see emergencies for our own clients as well as coverage for all other veterinary practices in our area.

It is a responsibility we take very seriously — and one we are honored to provide.

We want to take a minute to make sure horse owners understand how important transportation can be when an emergency occurs. Our hospital is staffed and fully equipped to receive emergencies around the clock and we can often see more than one emergency at a time in house. When a horse needs to be seen in the field, the veterinarian often has to leave other patients at the hospital and may not have all of the necessary support and equipment to best serve your horse or meet the needs of other patients. Depending on the number and severity of emergencies occurring at the same time, this can mean a significant delay in care for your horse — and there may be times when we simply cannot leave the hospital immediately.

Please make an emergency transportation plan before you need one.

If you own horses, we encourage you to:
• Have access to a truck and trailer, or know who you can call if you need one unexpectedly or late at night.
• Have a backup transportation option in case your usual plan isn't available or if you are out of town.
• Work with your horses so they can safely load and travel whenever possible.
• Keep your truck and trailer accessible, and make sure they are ready to use.

For emergencies outside of our established call radius, transportation to the hospital is necessary, as we are unable to provide field emergency service beyond that area.

Having a plan in place helps us provide the fastest and most effective care possible — not only for your horse, but for every horse relying on our emergency team that day.

Thank you for trusting us with your horses, for supporting our team, and for helping us continue to provide comprehensive emergency care to the entire Central Oregon horse community!
