Rufus is a 33 year old male Senegal parrot that came to see us for what was initially thought by another veterinarian to be crop stasis due to the presence of a lump on the right side of his neck. After a thorough physical by our veterinarian and a microscopic examination of a fine needle aspiration of the mass, it was confirmed that the mystery lump was lymphoma, a type of cancer. Prior to his surgery, our imaging team performed an ultrasound on Rufus's neck to confirm the location of delicate structures such as his jugular vein. The neoplastic mass was surgically removed and the procedure was uneventful. Lymphomas are the most common type of masses in psittacine birds and recurrence is likely. Monitoring for any future growths or changes is important as different medical interventions, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, might be necessary . Fortunately, Rufus's recovery was uneventful and was discharged from our hospital to continue his recovery at home.
