We are back!
September means the start of the grape harvest around here and it also kicks-off bottling season as we put the finishing touches on last year's delicious wines. We spent yesterday in the vineyard picking Brianna and the last several days bottling a few of last year's whites as well as our mead experiment.

Great weekend bottling and moving wine around. Blended and bottled up our 2014 cranberry apple montmorency cherry wine. Wow! Quite a combination.
Finished our weekend by hanging the lovely hand crafted wine rack made by our son and his girlfriend.

It looks as if our winemaking season has come to a close. Or at least the first part of this year's story. And we have sure had some great fun so far.
Over the last six weeks we have harvested, pressed, and completed fermentation on over 600 pounds of grapes yielding nearly 70 gallons of young wine. It has been a very busy time in which we learned a lot about the science, and art, of producing a quality wine from locally sourced northern grapes. Now the story continues as we wait, monitor, rack, and wait some more as our wine ages and develops it's own unique character in our story.
Special shout out to our new wine making friends - Jeff, Mary, Butch, and Bonnie. Thank you for your hospitality and patience with your self-acclaimed apprentices. Hope you realize that you're stuck with us now!

So it turns out we ended up picking, destemming, and crushing over 500 pounds of Frontenac grapes yesterday at Viriditas Vineyard near Viroqua. Great day with wonderful people. Enjoyed a very educational wine 101 class hosted by Jeff and Mary Aderman.

A busy day ahead of us as we plan on picking 200+ lbs of Frontenac. This should be the last picking of grapes for the season.
Now comes the hard part. Waiting until next summer for all of this to be ready for enjoyment!

Spent the better part of the day in the vineyard and winery of some new friends. A wonderful time picking and pressing 125 pounds of our first batch of Edelweiss and helping with a batch of Brianna. Thanks to Butch & Bonnie Sterling and Jeff & Mary Aderman for your wine wisdom and patience.

Time for an update from the winery.
We have been busy bottling last year's product over the past couple of months. Some pleasant surprises and of course it never lasts long.
Put our first fruit wine in the primary fermenter a few days back. This will be a wild plum/rhubarb wine that we have high hopes for as a sweet wine.
Today we picked and processed 100 # of bluebell concord grapes to try our hand at a table wine. Concords aren't known for great wine but nobody told that to Mogen David. We should yield 10+ gallons of this Jewish traditional wine. We plan on calling it bene barbatus which means full beard in Hebrew. Thought the name was fitting to honor our full bearded winery mascot.

We bottled up a couple of cases of our nine month old Marquette today. This was the 200 lbs of grape we started with in early October (see timeline photos). After five months aging on oak we think it's some of the best Marquette around.
Unfortunately our bearded supervisor ran out of energy to continue bottling so we still have another 5 gallons aging that should just continue to get better.

Today we racked off another 25 gallons of various fruit wines including this savory, young cranberry-apple. Still looking for an interesting name for this one. Send me your ideas and we'll send the winner a bottle in the spring when it's ready.

Racked off 10+ gallons of our 2014 Marquette today. This has all the makings of an outstanding wine! We will put it on oak around Christmas and bottle in the spring.
Nothing like the company of a young bearded dog on a wet fall day.
