When do we start a pup in weight pull?
We try to start our pups in harnesses as early as we can, usually around 8 weeks. We use cooperative care, luring their head through the harness with a food reward. After a few, easy sessions of this, the puppy is used to the harness going over their head and generally they start making the choice on their own to push their head through. Keep these and any puppy weight pull sessions to only 5 to 15 minutes, and make sure it's POSITIVE and FUN!
If you have a second person that can help, you can start by having them shoot the puppy to you in it's harness, while you call it, about 20 feet away. Now they will be used to wearing the harness and coming to you in it. When the puppy gets to you, make sure it is a HUGE party. If we engrain a fun and positive experience early, your dog will LOVE to pull.
Its also time to get them used to sounds behind them. We use a gallon jug with some rocks in it or more recently we purchased some plastic halloween chain from the dollar store that we use. Now they will start to understand dragging with noise.
We will also put the puppy on the track! Walk them down to the cart, ask them to turn and wait, and LET'S GO! At the end of the track (we call it THE PARTY ZONE) it is a HUGE celebration! Let the pup know they have achieved something!!! If the puppy is especially confident, we will push the cart behind them for some more noise conditioning. They can also feel the track vibrate under their feet, so this is a great way to socialize them to novel feelings under their paws when they are young!
Another great way for a puppy to learn is visually seeing what this is all about!! Crate them up by the track and let them observe experienced dogs! This can really help it click!
