Meet Nala! 🐾🖤

This sweet girl just started 1:1 training with us, and these next few lessons are all about building a solid foundation before she comes back in October for a 2-week Board & Train.

Nala can struggle with reactivity toward people, objects she hasn’t seen before, and unfamiliar situations, so a big part of her training will be helping her build confidence, create better impulse control, and learn how to move through the world without feeling like she has to react to everything around her.

We’ll also be focusing on clearer communication, engagement with her handler, neutrality, leash work, and giving her better ways to handle situations that currently feel overwhelming or unpredictable.

These first few lessons will give us a head start, help her understand the basics, and make that transition into Board & Train a little smoother when October rolls around.

With dogs like Nala, the goal isn’t just obedience. It’s helping them understand what’s expected, feel more secure in their environment, and build a stronger relationship with the person on the other end of the leash.

I’m really excited to work with this girl now and then really dive in during her Board & Train this fall. Stay tuned for more of Nala’s progress! 🐾

If your dog isn’t looking at you like this during training, something is missing.

Training should be about so much more than getting a dog to sit, down, heel, or come when called. At the center of good training should be connection and communication.

I’m a balanced trainer. That means I use both positive reinforcement and correction, and I believe dogs need clear boundaries and accountability. But balanced training should never mean creating a dog that is afraid to make a mistake, stressed every time the leash comes out, or constantly worried about what the handler might do next.

Your dog should want to engage with you. They should look to you for information. They should understand how to earn rewards, how to turn pressure off, what their boundaries are, and most importantly, that you are someone they can trust to communicate clearly and fairly.

Corrections have a place in training, but they aren’t the relationship. Tools aren’t the relationship. Communication is.

That’s why I use food. I play with dogs. I mark and reward behaviors I like. I teach leash pressure before expecting a dog to understand it. I build engagement. I celebrate the wins. And yes, when appropriate, I also hold dogs accountable for behaviors they already understand.

Balanced doesn’t mean training has to feel heavy.

You can have structure and enthusiasm.
Accountability and rewards.
Boundaries and a dog who genuinely loves working with you.

That look right there? That’s what I want. A dog who is checked in, engaged, confident, and part of the conversation.

Training shouldn’t just create obedience. It should create better communication between you and your dog.

🐾 Meet Mika!

Mika is a 13 week old Brittany who started her 1:1 lessons with me today, and I was probably a little more excited than I should admit. You just don’t come across Brittanys very often, and they are easily one of my favorite breeds to work with.

Today was all about building those puppy foundations. We introduced leash pressure, marker training and rewards, and started teaching her how to understand what we’re asking of her rather than just expecting her to magically know it. She was an absolute blast to work with!

Her family has some really cool goals for her as she grows, so I’m excited to help build the foundation now and watch what this little girl turns into over the next several weeks.

And I would like it officially documented that I did return Mika to her owners at the end of the lesson, despite strongly considering other options 😂

Can’t wait to see more of this girl!

Clever Canine Alumni Group Classes are officially launching this September! 🎉

Because finishing training doesn’t mean your dog suddenly becomes a perfectly programmed robot who never needs practice again. Unfortunately, they do not come with automatic software updates. 😂

Our first class dates will be:

🐾 Tuesday, September 15 at 7:00 PM
🐾 Saturday, September 19 at 10:00 AM
🐾 Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00 PM
🐾 Saturday, October 3 at 10:00 AM

These twice monthly classes are exclusively for dogs who have completed a Clever Canine training program. We’ll work on maintaining their skills, practicing around real world distractions, and helping you feel more confident using everything your dog has learned outside of your living room.

Classes are $30 each, and you can register for as many dates as you’d like. Payment and registration are required at least 24 hours before each class.

There is no attendance limit, but if no one registers by the 24-hour cutoff, class will be canceled because Balti and I do not need to stand around pretending we organized a very exclusive private event 🤣

We are BACK at it! 🐾

We hit the ground running on day one! We already have boarding pups here and a new Board & Train getting settled in, kicking off what is going to be a very full September at Clever Canine.

After taking some much needed time away, I’m excited to be back with the dogs and ready for everything we have coming up this month!

A quick scheduling update for anyone thinking about fall training or boarding:

We are booking mid October for boarding and board and trains.

We also already have clients booking into December! So if you know you have upcoming travel or you’ve been thinking about training, don’t wait too long to reach out.

And if you’ve been considering a Board & Train, now is a great time to get it scheduled and have your pup trained and ready before the holidays hit. Because somehow, despite it being September, the holidays are apparently already coming for us. 😂

Good morning, good afternoon, or whatever time it is on the East Coast. 😂 At this point, I’ve completely lost track!

We’re making our journey home tomorrow after an incredible trip, and what an experience it has been. I’m so grateful we took this time away to explore, recharge, and actually step away from work for a little bit.

With that being said, if you’ve sent me a text, email, or inquiry and haven’t heard back yet, please reach out again! I did my best to avoid working as much as possible on this trip so I could come back refreshed and ready to jump into what is officially a FULLY BOOKED September!

Clever Canine is officially out of office! 🐾

I’ll be away August 23 through September 1, taking some much-needed time to unplug and recharge with my husband. I may check messages occasionally, but responses will be limited until I return on September 2.

Thank you so much for your patience and for allowing me the opportunity to step away and enjoy this time. I’ll be back soon, rested and ready to work with and love on all your dogs again! 🖤
