Six years ago today, Scruffy’s opened its doors.
Sometimes it’s hard to believe that sentence is true.
We opened in June of 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic. The world felt uncertain, businesses everywhere were struggling, and if I’m being honest, there were moments in those first few months when I wasn’t sure we’d make it.
A few months after opening, I walked across the street to Saint Tattoo () and got the Scruffy’s logo tattooed on me.
People sometimes assume it was because Scruffy’s was already a success.
It wasn’t.
I got it because I believed in what we were building, even when I had no proof it would work.
It was a leap of faith and a promise to myself that I was all in.
Six years later, that little cat cafe has become so much more than I ever imagined.
We’ve helped hundreds of cats find homes. We’ve watched friendships form, relationships begin, and a community grow around a shared love of animals and each other. We’ve helped plan your birthday parties, graduation celebrations, bachelorette trips, and crossed all our fingers and toes for those of you who come here for first dates or to propose to your significant others. We’ve celebrated victories together, weathered challenges together, and somehow made it through every chapter. We’ve hosted close to 100 events, partnered with over 50 organizations and artists, and have adopted out nearly 1200 cats.
There is no version of this story that happens without all of you. There is no version of me that will ever be complete without Scruffy’s.
To every customer who bought a coffee, every adopter who took a chance on a cat, every volunteer, employee, donor, supporter, and friend of Scruffy’s—thank you. From the bottom of my heart. It is not easy to support local all the time, and I’m aware of the constraints, but you all have shown up every day for six years straight. Six years!
Six years ago, I had a dream and a lot of hope.
Today, I have you all to remind me that sometimes the best things in life start with a leap of faith and a community willing to believe alongside you.
