Just a health update: I have officially been diagnosed with lymphedema in my right leg. A CT scan has been ordered for further evaluation. For now, I’m treating it with a compression stocking and will go back to the vascular specialist for a lymphatic pump trial.
I am keeping my usual schedule, but will keep everyone updated.

This past Friday, I had the honor of speaking at my papaw Jack’s memorial.

I was nervous, so I kept my eyes on the words in front of me instead of looking out at everyone. I just focused on telling our story.

After the service, several people came up to me, shook my hand, and told me how much they liked what I shared. They also told me how much they enjoyed the poem Papaw had written.

That meant more to me than they’ll probably ever know.
—————————
I was adopted when I was eight days old, so I didn’t have the opportunity to grow up with my papaw. We missed birthdays, Christmases, and so many of those everyday moments that families usually get to share.

Years later, though, our story wasn’t over.

God gave us the opportunity to find each other again, and I’ll always be thankful He did.

The week of Christmas in 2001, he and Sue picked me up from the airport. That week, Papaw started showing me some of the places he thought were unique and interesting.

The two of us would get in his van and just drive.

He took me to Cherokee Lake and Cherokee Dam. He showed me Crockett’s Tavern. Another day, he and Sue took me toward Kentucky. I remember how excited he was to take me through the tunnel at Cumberland Gap.

We went on to Lynch, where our first stop was Portal 31. While we were inside the mine, Papaw found a piece of coal and handed it to me. He told me members of our family had worked there. After that, we visited the Coal Mining Museum, and he spent the rest of the day showing me around Lynch.

Later that week, on Christmas Day, we went downstairs to the basement and sat at his computer. We talked, threw ideas back and forth, and before we knew it, we’d written a poem together called Water, Water Everywhere.

The very next day, he surprised me with another poem. This one he had written just for me.

As I’ve read it again over these last few weeks, one line keeps coming back to me:

“I pray that the years give me the right to say this night, ‘Please forgive me and let’s make it right.’”

When he wrote those words, neither of us knew what the years ahead would hold.

But we were given that chance to make it right.

Looking back now, I believe God knew all along.
———————————
For now, I’m going to keep that poem private.
I just wanted to share the story behind it, and the words I was able to speak in Papaw’s honor.

Thank you to everyone who was there, who listened, and who took the time to come up and speak with me afterward. Your kind words meant more than you’ll probably ever know.

I love you, Papaw.

Noticed that my right leg was swollen more than usual. Saw my primary doctor today. She suspects it’s something vascular. Ultrasound is set for next week. She also noted swelling in my stomach. Hope to get some answers soon.

Thank you Kimery Leonard Co***rd for this beautiful pet collar memorial in honor of Tobey.
