I don’t have a title for this. These are simply words from the heart.
For years, people have trusted me with one of the most important members of their family. What many of them don’t know is that their dogs have spent all those years taking care of me, too.
Some of these dogs have been part of my life for nearly two decades. I’ve watched puppies become seniors. I’ve watched families grow. I’ve celebrated happy moments with them, and I’ve grieved alongside them when it was time to say goodbye.
There were seasons in my life when I walked into the salon—or later, my grooming trailer—carrying far more than my grooming tools. Stress. Grief. Self-doubt. Exhaustion. Life.
The dogs always seemed to know.
Dogs have an incredible way of meeting us exactly where we are. They don’t ask us to explain ourselves. They don’t judge us for having a hard day. They simply offer their presence, reminding us to slow down, breathe, and be fully present in the moment.
That’s one of the reasons I believe every interaction with a dog should be intentional. I talk to them. I listen to them. I watch their body language. I respect what they’re trying to tell me. Grooming has never been just about the haircut. It’s about building trust, creating safety, and honoring the relationship.
People often thank me for taking such good care of their dogs.
The truth is… their dogs have taken care of me, too.
Every dog I’ve had the privilege of grooming has left something behind—a memory, a lesson, a laugh, a quiet reminder to live more in the present.
And when one moves away or crosses the Rainbow Bridge, I truly feel that loss. Not because I want that piece of me back, but because somewhere along the way, we carried each other. They left paw prints on my heart, and I’d like to believe they carried away a little of the weight I was holding.
After all these years, I’ve realized something.
Dogs don’t just come to us to be cared for.
Sometimes they come to help heal us, too.
To every dog who has ever stood on my table, leaned into my hands, fallen asleep during a groom, or simply reminded me to smile…
