So happy to be starting new students, with the summer heat tapering off. Beginners trotting with nicely balanced rising trot withing a 2-3 lessons, jumping within 10.

That's with my sweet gentle 15.2H Anglo-Arab dressage mare: Hershey Kissez on left, relaxing)..

No more than 1 lesson a day and no more than 5 sessions a week. Weight limit 165 #. Space still open for a couple more riders, any level. Always something new to learn.

TIP: Teaching "go" and "whow" to a horse newly with a rider on his back.

When training my young horses under saddle, this truth became universally evident. They don't know it's ok to go forward with a rider.** Once they do understand that, you need to teach them to stop. ** Exception is a horse that takes off running out of fear - don't want that!

Teaching the horse to walk on is easier with a lead ground person. They already know to walk on a lead rope (right?).

Flutter kicking is confusing. Apply steady leg pressure and hold, as a ground person asks the horse to walk forward. When the horse takes the first couple steps forward, release the leg pressure. That's his reward for doing what you asked. Keep the ground person walking him on, until you're ready to teach the horse to halt on command. Don't forget that last part, because it's not automatically understood by the horse.

TIPS on lead changes:

Ride your horse in a large figure 8 with a ground pole at the center. Ask for the lead change as he canters over the pole. This helps.

Another way is to counter-canter a large circle, then ask for the lead change at a marker cone, so he starts anticipating that it's coming.

As you ask for the lead change, ask not only with your inside rein to change the bend, but also with your outside leg back first and your weight in the saddle shifted to the new outside (unload your weight on the inside).

Ask first from the rear. You can lift your inside rein, palm up and toward your opposite elbow ("indirect rein") to help support the inside shoulder as you ask for the change in bend.

Got all that?! Don't feel bad. No one ever said it was easy.

I used to have fun asking my horse to canter from a stand still. First, with outside leg back to push the hindquarters in, unload my set to lighten the inside then inside rein to complete the proper bend. Then, from a standstill, I'd give a quick thump with my inside herl near tge girth, and bingo! Off into a canter from the standstill.
