🐾 “But She Saw Me… Why Didn’t She Come?”

One of the most heartbreaking moments for a lost pet owner is spotting their pet—only to watch them run away.

The truth is, many lost pets are not thinking the way they do at home.

When fear takes over, a pet can enter what’s known as survival mode. In this state, instinct often overrides training, obedience, and even the bond they share with their family.

A scared pet may:
🐕 Avoid eye contact
🐕 Ignore their name
🐕 Refuse favorite treats
🐕 Run from familiar people
🐕 Hide silently nearby

To them, anything moving toward them—even their beloved owner—can feel like a threat.

This is why chasing, calling repeatedly, or organizing large search parties can actually push a frightened pet farther away.

Instead, recovery efforts should focus on helping the pet feel safe enough to stop running and begin making predictable movements.

Remember: A pet avoiding you doesn’t mean they’ve forgotten you. It means fear is making the decisions right now.

Think lost, not stray. ❤️

Welcome home, Scratchy Pete 🐈🏡

Missing for 5 days, this indoor-only kitty disappeared from Creek Rd. in Martins Point, Southern Shores for the very first time. Pete’s daddy was extremely worried. Pete was once a rescued feral kitty who spent the last 8 years living the indoor life with his family and other cats.
The owner reached out wanting tracking services, but with three other cats inside the home, we unfortunately did not have a true designated scent item for Pete. I explained that indoor-only cats typically do not travel far — they usually stay hidden very close to home or maybe a house or two away.
Day 1, the owner had boots on the ground, flyers- door to door searching. Letting neighbors know. Checking sheds at night.
Day 2, I suggested placing dirty clothing outside to provide comforting, familiar scents for Pete.
Now here’s where it got interesting… Pete LOVES shrimp 🍤. He and the other cats eat fresh shrimp daily, so instead of our typical canned mackerel scent trails, I had the owner make a shrimp-water mixture using shrimp peelings in a jug to lay scent trails around the property.
And guess what? Two days later… Pete came home ❤️
The scent trails helped guide him back and encouraged him to come out from hiding. Welcome home, Pete! Safe to say everyone slept much better last night.

Memorial weekend is approaching. Fireworks can be fun for us, but they can be scary and dangerous for pets. 🎆🐾

Few things to keep in mind keeping your animals safe during the holiday weekend 🇺🇸🐾🐕🐈

• Keep pets indoors during fireworks whenever possible — loud noises can cause panic and escape attempts.
• Make sure collars, ID tags, and microchip information are current.
• Avoid bringing pets to crowded fireworks displays, parades, or BBQs.
• Keep human food & drinks out of reach — especially alcohol, onions, grapes, chocolate, corn cobs, and xylitol-containing snacks.
• Sparklers, fireworks, lighter fluid, and glow sticks can all be dangerous if chewed or swallowed.
• Provide a quiet “safe space” with calming music, blankets, or their favorite toy.
• Never leave pets outside unattended during fireworks.
• If traveling, pack food, medications, water, leash/harness, and vaccination records ahead of time.
• Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, or bright red gums.
• After parties or cookouts, check yards carefully for leftover skewers, bones, and food scraps.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend ❤️🐾
