Photo tip from the trainer!

One great way to get fantastic photos if you are trying to get a dog to pose and take a picture is to put your camera near dog level and start recording a video. You can then get screen grabs from the video for some very cute photos, just check in with your video to make sure your dog is in the frame, you are not in the shot, and the dog is looking towards the camera which likely means you will need to be towards the camera.

Here is a video showing how I got some of the pictures I posted of Charlee earlier.

Charlee is a young (just turned 1!) and super fun active puppy so for the Snow White dress video and pictures since I wanted her to be still I lowered my energy to be boring so she wouldn't be as excited and would be able to sit still. For the Harry Potter robe pictures since we had props I wanted to see if I could get her to hold we were playing and more active!

Training tip: Getting cute photos!

The holidays are quickly approaching and we have a Halloween costume contest to prepare for so here are some tips to help your pet look their very best!!!

The biggest secret to getting gorgeous photos is to build value for your dog holding their position. I don't even call this a "stay" because photo shoots can be super distracting and you might want them to be dynamic so a "stay" can be hard, but if your dog has been rewarded for holding position even with the chaos of a photoshoot they are more likely to sit still! Here are some cute pictures of Charlee during one of her last training sessions this stay. She had a few training sessions before this where I rewarded her for attention, sits, and downs, and this photo shoot was a great opportunity to practice all of those skills, and she did fantastic!

Training tip: House / Potty training!

One very important tip when it comes to house training is that it is normally best to ignore your dog/puppy after you take them outside until they potty. Then you want to wait until they have fully finished pottying then praise them for pottying outside (verbal and or treat / play)!

If you praise right when they start to potty oftentimes they will stop pottying / only partially potty which could make the next potty break need to come much sooner. I reccomend being boring until they potty so your dog isn't distracted. It is much easier, especially for a young or excitable dog, to potty when the surrounding is boring. Going somewhere quiet and not windy can also help it be a nice "boring" low distraction/ low excitement place to go potty.

If you need more potty training tips or advice we can go over that in a private lesson!

Training Tip: Signs of stress/fear that could lead to aggressive behavior if ignored.

Did you know that yawning, extra blinking, and turning their head or body away are all signs your dog could be uncomfortable about their current situation?

These early signs of discomfort can escalate to growling and a bite if ignored so if you notice those kinds of behaviors try to figure out what could be upsetting your dog.

There is also something called "whale eye" (pictured). Some people call it "stink eye," and that is a big sign of fear.

If your dog is showing signs of stress, fear, or aggression it is important to address those as quickly as possible for your dogs health, safety, and happiness, but also for the safety of everyone around them.

Due to the events of the F3 tornado that hit the Valley View & Sanger, TX area, the Animal Hospital on Milam Road's wonderful staff has gone out into the community & rescued many fur babies and brought them back into the clinic for shelter and care.

There are many pups that they have under their care as well as that have needed treatment. One of their lovely guests is named Willow & was found on the side of the road by a wonderful human & she has a broken leg & pelvis that needs an important extensive surgery! Funds will go towards Willow's surgery, vaccinations, medications, & other treated injuries! They also have some pups that have found their owners but will be staying at the clinic at no cost due to their homes being destroyed or them being hospitalized themselves that funds will go towards.

We would love your help in raising money! These sweet babies have been through so much trauma already & we appreciate absolutely everything that this community has already done to help them! If you feel led to donate to the cause, please use this link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/aid-for-tornadoaffected-dogs-in-sanger
