A little nose work, a little quality time, and two happy faces. šŸ¾šŸ’›

Even as a trainer, I love making time to get out and do things with my own dog. Scent work gives us a chance to work together, put that amazing nose to use, and enjoy the process.

One of my favorite parts is watching my dog take the lead while I learn to trust what he’s telling me. Training goes both ways!

Find something you and your dog enjoy doing together. Those moments are just as valuable as practicing your everyday obedience.

What’s your favorite activity to do with your dog? šŸ‘‡

We get better at the things we practice—and so do our dogs.

If your dog spends the day barking and charging at the window every time a person or dog passes by, they’re getting repeated practice reacting to those things.

That practice doesn’t always stay inside the house. The same triggers may bring out that same response when you’re out on a leash.

Every walk is a chance to work on better habits, but what your dog rehearses at home matters, too!

Blocking access to the window, using privacy film, or setting up a comfortable resting spot away from the action can help reduce those daily rehearsals. Then you can practice and reward calmer responses at a distance your dog can handle.

We can’t expect our dogs to practice one response all day and easily switch gears when we clip on the leash.

Think about what your dog is practicing—even when you aren’t actively training. ā¤ļø

A VERY SPECIAL AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JINZ!!!!

We were informed that she loves to tear apart paper towel rolls, so we filled one with treats for her.

Jinz came for training as a puppy and has continued daycare with us ever since! We love this girl (and her family). Happy birthday Jinz!

Yesterday’s trip to the vet was a perfect reminder that training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about making everyday life easier.

In the waiting room, my dog’s ability to sit calmly and remain close to me helped us manage a busy, distracting environment.

When it was time for the exam, his understanding of place helped him get onto the table. The time we’ve spent teaching him to accept being touched and handled made it easier for the veterinary staff to examine him.

At checkout, a sit-stay kept him settled instead of wandering around or pulling toward everyone. When I needed both hands to sign for my receipt, his middle cue gave him a clear, secure place to remain between my legs.

Then, because he had been such a good boy, we stopped at the local ice cream shop for a treat. His leash skills helped us navigate that environment calmly, too.

These may look like separate training exercises when you practice them at home, but they all become useful pieces of everyday life. We don’t teach these skills just to make our dogs ā€œobedient.ā€ We teach them so we can communicate clearly, help them feel secure, and take them more places with us.

Training shows its true value when you need it outside of a training session. 🐾

Your dog isn’t giving you a hard time—they may be having a hard time.

When your dog ignores a cue, barks, lunges, jumps, or completely loses focus, it’s easy to assume they’re being stubborn or ā€œknow better.ā€

But are they refusing—or is the situation simply harder than what they’ve been prepared for?

Fear, excitement, distractions, confusion, and frustration can all affect your dog’s ability to respond. A dog who listens perfectly in the living room may not be ready to perform that same skill around visitors, other dogs, or exciting smells.

Before repeating the cue or correcting the behavior, pause and ask:

ā€œIs my dog being difficult, or is this situation difficult for my dog?ā€

This week inside the Daley Obedience Skool community, we’re talking about how to recognize why your dog is struggling—and how to adjust your training so they can succeed.

🐾 What did your dog do RIGHT today?

We’re quick to notice the barking, jumping, pulling, and stealing—but good behavior often happens quietly.

Maybe your dog:

• Settled while you made dinner
• Looked at you instead of reacting
• Kept four paws on the floor
• Chose a toy instead of your shoe
• Relaxed beside you without being asked

When you notice and reward these small choices, you teach your dog which behaviors are worth repeating.

Today’s challenge: Catch your dog doing three things right.

I shared more about how to do this—including an important tip for rewarding calm behavior—inside the Daley Obedience Skool community. Join us here: [add link]

What good choice did your dog make today? Tell me below! šŸ‘‡
