Layla working on her nerves during a field trip to Lowe’s. She is very uncomfortable outside of her comfort zone. Working on commands in those scenarios helps her focus on something other than being nervous. The down command is also a challenge. We finally have successfully mastered that. She goes home tomorrow with lots of homework!

Sunnie went on a field trip today as part of her VIP boarding program. She went to Lowe’s and practiced all her old skills. She was definitely nervous but she ran through commands like a champ. She will definitely sleep well tonight! #

Butter had a field trip in Plymouth today to work on his reactivity around other dogs. You can see by his body language how uncomfortable his is when there’s another dog present compared to when there isn’t. We worked on obedience work and being able to redirect his focus BEFORE he reacts. He was corrected for even having the thought of a bad reaction. (Meaning he would not break focus from the other dog when we asked for his attention). Timing is essential with these situations. We are happy to report we saw a dozen dogs and had zero outbursts.

Miss Sunnie is taking advantage of our new VIP boarding program. Her mom has added on some extra training time, some fun puzzle time and some adventure time. In her training session we brushed up on all her skills from her previous board and train. Her loose leash walking and Place command are crisp. She got some good sniff time after some good structure time. Puzzles are child’s play for her. It takes longer to load the puzzle than it does for her to find the goodies.

Let’s talk body language. Miss Layla is here for a board and train program. She is a very insecure and defensive girl. She has started putting teeth on humans when she feels too much pressure. Here’s a progression of here cues to us during a training session. She is absolutely telling us in the beginning she does NOT want interaction. It’s up to us humans to understand her quiet messages before they become louder (teeth). As we worked through the place command she visibly relaxed. She took a food reward but that was the extent of human interaction. She could relax because she began to understand she did not have to interact. She zoned out into a peaceful head space. We ended the exercise on that note. This lesson lasted a few minutes but it will be impactful for Layla. The small moments are what really truly matter. Pay attention to them.

So Peach and I were having a serious conversation during her last lesson. She’s doing the bootcamp program and she is on lesson 4 (out of 6). Her question was “what’s next?” I said well that’s a good question. We have had quite a few fellow bootcampers ask the same question. We hear “we so enjoyed working with our dogs, what more can we do after this?” So that got the wheels turning in our brains. We are in a new season, soon to be a new month and you know what? It’s time for some new classes. To all our graduates let’s hear some feedback. If we rolled out a bootcamp level 2…say 4 sessions…what would YOU like to work on? We were thinking about how to politely greet a stranger, a stranger with a dog, out in public, commands on verbal cue only…those types of things. Let’s get some suggestions going. Then the next question would be…who would like to enroll in a bootcamp level 2? The holidays are around the corner let’s get back into training shape together!

Brutus is starting to settle into life main a board and train. He’s strong as an Ox and the idea of cooperation was nowhere in his brain. We seem to be cracking that defensiveness. Stay tuned to see how he transform. # adogsworldunleashed trainer
