🍂 Your Fall Scents Could Be Hurting Your Pet
✨ What smells cozy to you… can make them sick.

It’s fall. The air smells like cinnamon, clove, and apple cider.
Candles flicker, wax melts hum — and your pet is struggling to breathe.

Those “cozy” scents often hide phthalates, benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde — toxins that can trigger liver failure or seizures in cats and dogs.
Even “natural” essential oils like cinnamon, clove, citrus, pine, eucalyptus, and tea tree can poison pets.

🐾 Here’s the truth:
Pets process oils differently.
They breathe closer to the floor, where fumes are heaviest.
And the symptoms — drooling, hiding, vomiting, labored breathing — are often mistaken for allergies.

💡 What to do:
• Burn candles only in ventilated spaces — never where pets sleep.
• Avoid diffusers around cats entirely.
• Choose pet-safe candles (soy, beeswax, no synthetic fragrance).
• If they show signs of distress → Vet. Immediately.

Your cozy fall vibe shouldn’t come at their expense.
Keep the warmth. Lose the toxins.

What is H5N1?
H5N1, commonly known as avian influenza A or bird flu, is a highly pathogenic strain of influenza virus that primarily affects birds, but cases have recently been reported in wildlife, cattle, cats, and humans.

What do we know about the latest outbreak?
Recently H5N1 influenza cases have been reported in cats that have consumed contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.

Precautions:
Consider discontinuing your pet’s raw diet. Even if their raw food is human grade, frozen, or freeze dried, this does not prevent the potential spread of pathogenic bacteria, parasites, or H5N1 that may be present in the food. Consider cooking your pet’s raw food and/or consulting your veterinarian about diet change.
Limit your pet’s access to wild birds that may be carrying the virus and avoid giving them raw milk.

What are the symptoms to watch out for in our pets?
Clinical signs in pets may include the following:
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Neurologic signs (ataxia, circling, tremors, seizures, sudden blindness)
• Copious oculonasal discharge
• Difficulty breathing
We recommend seeking veterinary care if your pet shows any of these signs. If they are having any life-threatening symptoms (neurologic signs, seizures, difficulty breathing, or collapse) seek veterinary care immediately.

Can this cause illness in humans?
Yes, H5N1 can cause illness in humans. Current human infections have been linked to contact with infected cattle and wild birds. There is no current evidence of human to human transmission.

What is being done?
The CDC, FDA and USDA are closely monitoring cases as they develop. One voluntary product recall has been issued for contaminated raw food diets for cats & dogs. We are continuing to monitor this emerging virus.

A mysterious respiratory disease in dogs has received a great deal of press coverage over the past few weeks. Is it time to panic? No, but we do need to stay informed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Warren family during this time of sorrow.

The City of King is saddened to announce the passing of Mayor Jack Warren on Sunday. Mayor Warren was a proud US Veteran, having served in the United States Army. His dedication to service continued back in his hometown of King, where he was elected as Councilman in 1987 and then as Mayor for the next 24 years. He was the longest actively serving Mayor in the State of North Carolina. During his service to the City, Mayor Warren served many community organizations and boards, including President of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Commander of American Legion Post 290, Hospice and Palliative Care Advisory Council, and the City of King Planning Board. He was also a long-time supporter and advocate for local veterans. In September of 2022, Mayor Warren had the prestigious honor of receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest award presented by the Governor of North Carolina for his extraordinary service to the state.
The City of King will be forever grateful for Mayor Warren’s legacy of hard work, integrity, and perseverance.

Not all dogs, just like not all people, can swim and throwing them in the pool or lake will not automatically bring forth that instinct. Please be careful around the water this summer!

When the weather heats up, many people and pups love getting in the water to cool down. Whether a dog enjoys swimming or just splashing in the shallows,

If you have backyard poultry, please take note of this important announcement from the NC Department of Agriculture.

NCDA&CS Veterinary Division strongly recommends to keep all poultry indoors, including organic/free-range flocks, for at least 30 days from today. Allowing these flocks to have access to outdoors during this time would put them at increased risk of contracting High Path Avian Influenza. NCDA&CS will continue to monitor this disease threat and this recommended time period may be extended.

Yesterday, we received two reports of more hunter-harvested wild waterfowl of mixed species (American Widgeon, Mallard, Gadwall, Northern Pintail and Northern Shoveler) with preliminary results detecting H5 Eurasian High Path Avian Influenza in several birds. All of these birds were sampled on Jan. 8, 2022. These results identified 3 more positive waterfowl that originated in the same location in Hyde county as our original isolation and 34 more positive waterfowl originating from a single location in Pamlico county.
