When is a reptile tail no longer salvageable?

Leopard geckos and many other lizards can develop tail vascular necrosis, a condition where the blood supply to part of the tail is lost. This can happen after trauma, retained sheds, bites from cage mates, infections, or other underlying medical conditions. Without adequate blood flow, the affected portion of the tail begins to die.

Early signs may include:
• Darkening or black discoloration
• A dry, shriveled appearance
• Cold or firm tissue
• Progressive changes moving up the tail

Unfortunately, once tissue becomes truly necrotic, it cannot recover. Waiting too long can allow infection to spread to healthy tissue, making treatment more difficult.

At that point, tail amputation is often the safest and most humane option. The good news is that many lizards, including leopard geckos, have natural fracture planes (autotomy planes) within their tails. These are specialized areas where the tail can naturally detach. During surgery, veterinarians often use these natural planes whenever possible, helping minimize trauma and promote better healing.

While many geckos can regenerate part of their tail after amputation, the new tail is usually different in shape and texture from the original. The priority is always removing unhealthy tissue before it threatens the rest of the body.
