The Regional Animal Shelter (RAS) is a municipal facility that provides for the care and welfare of displaced animals from King William and King and Queen Counties. RAS assists citizens of our community with a wide range of services such as:

Pet adoption to suitable permanent homes
Tracking of lost and found animals
Redemption of animals to their owners
Dog licensing for King William and King and

Queen Counties

Barnacle Boy is looking for someone who needs a copilot. 💙

Not just someone with a couch. Someone with a passenger seat, a leash by the door, and room in their plans for one VERY enthusiastic goofy dude.

Barnacle Boy is the kind of dog who wakes up ready to participate. Road trip? He’s in. Hike? Absolutely. Dog friends? YES. Lazy afternoon afterward? Scoot over.

He’s lived with dogs AND cats, rides great in the car, knows his commands, loves everyone, thinks kids are pretty great too, and has one of those personalities that makes absolutely everything seem like the BEST. DAY. EVER.

Seriously, look at that face. The man is DELIGHTED to be alive. 😂

And somehow, this ridiculously lovable adventure buddy is still looking for his person.

So we’re making this VERY easy:
Barnacle Boy will be at the shelter TODAY from 11–2.

AUGUST. WHAT. A. MONTH. ❤️

August chewed us up, spit us out, and somehow we still walked into September with a 92% Live Release Rate. 🎉

And y'all... we WORKED for this one.

We battled parvo. We cared for animals from cruelty cases, medical emergencies, and some incredibly difficult circumstances. We helped neighboring shelters when we could. Our kennels filled up, we scrambled to make space, animals left, and somehow five more seemed to appear in their place.

By August 18th, we had only 17 outcomes for the entire month.

Less than two weeks later? 61.

That means 44 outcomes happened in the final week and a half of August.

Forty-four animals adopted, reclaimed, transferred, or otherwise moved through our doors in about a week and a half.

That doesn't happen because we got lucky.

It happens because staff absolutely busted their butts, rescue partners squeezed in just one more, fosters made room, adopters showed up, volunteers jumped in, our community shared our posts, tagged their friends, and listened when we said we need help.

August brought some heartbreaking losses, too. We cared for animals who arrived critically sick, injured, and vulnerable, and despite everything, not every story ended the way we wanted it to.

That's sheltering. The incredible wins and the really crappy days exist right alongside each other.

But after everything August threw at this little shelter...92%. ❤️

Not because it was easy, but because when things got hard, a whole lot of people refused to stop fighting for the animals in our care.

September is already in full swing, the shelter is still packed, and plenty more animals are waiting for their turn.

Let's keep 'em moving. 🐾

🐾 FRIDAY: Lobby open 9:30 AM–12 PM, Kennels open 11 AM–12 PM
🐾 SATURDAY: Open 11 AM–2 PM
🐾 SUNDAY: Closed
🐾 MONDAY: Closed for Labor Day

And YES, you can absolutely still come see us before we close Friday! Adopt, foster, come fall in love with somebody you absolutely did not plan on bringing home. 🤷‍♀️

All adoptions are FREE through September thanks to Friends of King William Animal Shelter, so really, what better way to celebrate a three-day weekend than acquiring a new roommate?

That’s right. ALL ADOPTIONS ARE $0 THROUGH THE END OF SEPTEMBER.

Thanks to our incredible Friends of King William Animal Shelter sponsoring adoption costs, we’re waiving the remaining $20 fee and sending pets home for FREE.

Dogs? Free.
Cats? Free.
Hounds with opinions? Free.
Tiny criminals? Free.
Professional couch occupiers? ALSO FREE.

And with over 60 animals currently in our care, there has quite literally never been a better time to come fall in love with somebody.

You wanted puppies?

How about almost three month old LAB PUPPIES who already beat the odds before they even learned where they’re supposed to p*e?

These little nuggets have spent the last few weeks dealing with parvo, a highly contagious and deadly virus that is especially dangerous for young puppies.

But LOOK AT THEM NOW.

Healthy. Happy. Cleared. AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION.

They have officially survived the scary stuff and would now like to move on to more age-appropriate challenges, such as:

Eating your shoes.
Falling off the couch.
Carrying sticks six times their body length.

👓 GOGGLES UPDATE: STILL NO EYES.

We checked.
But she DOES have something she didn’t have last time you saw her:

The p*epers have been yeeted. The sockets have sealed. The cone has retired.
The Final Peepers Tour is officially over.

Thanks to Richmond Animal Care & Control Tommie's Fund and our incredible friends at Bell Creek Veterinary Hospital, Goggles got the care she needed, healed beautifully, and has adjusted to life without eyes remarkably well.

She has never looked back. Or forward. Or anywhere, really.

And if adopting a blind cat sounds intimidating, please know Goggles has absolutely no idea she’s supposed to be inconvenienced by any of this.

We have chosen not to tell her.

She eats. She cuddles. She plays. She navigates. She finds her people. What she has NOT managed to find is her forever home.

Poor choice of words. Again.

So we’re gonna need the seeing members of this operation to handle that part.

66.

That is not a typo. There are currently 66 animals in our care.

For a little perspective: our shelter has adoption kennel space for roughly 20 dogs and 20 cats.

We have 66 animals. Sixty. Six.

And we are getting dangerously close to the point where there is simply nowhere left to put the next animal who needs us.

We can shuffle kennels. We can rearrange. We can get creative. We can stare at the building like another room might spontaneously appear.

Unfortunately, we have confirmed that the shelter does not expand when you add more animals.

So we need to subtract.

Adopt. Foster. Rescue partners, come shopping.
We need animals leaving this building, and we need it happening now.

There are 66 individual little lives behind that number. Some have been here forever. Some just got here. Some are easy. Some are weird. Some have approximately three functioning brain cells and we love them anyway.

But at this point?

A kennel is a kennel, and we need them empty.

Come meet somebody.
Take somebody home.
Help us turn 66 into a much, much smaller number.

🏡 Beau would like to return to his regularly scheduled programming: House Hound

Beau is a big boy with one primary objective: love somebody as hard as physically possible. And as you can see, he is very good at it. 😂

Kennel life, though? Not really Beau’s thing. He’s a sensitive guy, and the noise, commotion, and general chaos of shelter life can be a lot for him. Get him into a home and suddenly you’ve got this sweet, cuddly, ridiculously lovable dude who just wants to hang out with his people.

There is one thing Beau is requesting in his next home: a dog friend. 🐶❤️🐶

He’s lived with dogs, cats, and kids before, and having another dog around helps him feel more comfortable and confident. So if your current dog has been asking for a slightly oversized emotional support hound, we may know a guy.

Beau doesn’t need to get better at being a shelter dog.
He needs to stop being one.
