Hey everyone, meet my new Board & Train dogs!
This is Bear and Peanut. Bear is the black Lab mix on the left, and Peanut is the tan and white Great Pyrenees mix on the right.
Bear is here for my 30-Day Board & Train to get some much-needed puppy training. He’s a confident little dude—almost too confident. Before coming here, he pretty much ran the household. As far as Bear was concerned, it was his way or the highway.
He’s been here almost two days now and is quickly learning that his way isn’t always the best option. One thing we’re already working through is kennel training. Bear has some strong opinions about going into a crate and isn’t afraid to argue about it. Some of you may have seen my recent post about the puppy that scratched up my arm when I was putting him in his kennel—that was Bear’s handiwork. 😂😂
Other than being a little overly defiant and impulsive, he’s really not a bad puppy. He’s got a lot of potential. He simply missed out on some early structure and was allowed to get away with quite a bit during his first six months in his new home.
Next up is Peanut.
Peanut is here for my 14-Day Board & Train. His biggest issues are leash pulling, lack of handler awareness on leash, and resource guarding around other dogs.
What makes Peanut interesting is that he’ll guard things he doesn’t even seem to want. For example, he’ll go after another dog over a ball, but most of the time he doesn’t show much interest in actually playing with it himself. Most resource guarders want possession of the item—they’ll carry it, stand over it, or stay close to it. Peanut doesn’t really do that. He’ll ignore the ball until another dog gets it, throw a fit, and then go right back to acting like he doesn’t care about it.
So far, I’m leaning toward insecurity being a major factor. He shows similar behavior when people walk up to the dog building or when cars pull into the driveway. He puffs himself up, barks, growls, and acts like he’s the toughest dog around, but once he’s corrected, he settles right down.
This morning someone rode past the house on horseback, and Peanut acted like he was ready to save the world from the dangerous horse invasion. 😂 That one took a little more work because it was something completely new to him, but he still settled down nicely once he understood what was expected.
Both of these guys are going to be a lot of fun to work with, and I’m excited to see how they progress over the next couple of weeks.
Stay tuned for updates!
