Do you breed English or American Labs?" I get this one a lot, and most people asking it are really asking something else: will this dog be calm, and is it a real Lab?

Both are real. One breed, one standard, two types bred for two different jobs. The one that fits your house isn't about the name or the color, it's about the dogs behind the dog.

Last week I found out the difference between "my dog is chipped" and "my dog is registered." It's the phone number. Nola's wasn't attached to anything.

The four steps, in order:
1) Find your dog's chip number. It's on the vet record, or ask them to scan.
2) Enroll it on AKC Reunite. One payment, lifetime.
3) Log in once a year. Check the phone number, the photo, the password.
4) If they get out, hit Report Lost Pet. It only works if 1 through 3 are done.

Part 2: who to call, in this order šŸ¾

When two of my dogs got out, I lost time doing things I should have done long before.

So hereā€™s the order Iā€™d follow now:
Post in your townā€™s Facebook groups, and every surrounding townā€™s too. You have no idea how far a dog on a big adventure can go.

Call animal control. If you canā€™t reach a real person, call the non-emergency number. Those dispatchers want your dog home too.

Report your dog missing on AKC Reunite. They email everyone nearby with a Reunite account, plus vets and emergency hospitals in your area.

Reach out to your local lost dog group with all your info and your most recent photo.

Lean on your community. Ask friends for help.

And what Iā€™m doing differently now: updating Reunite once or twice a year, keeping a clear, full photo of each dog (not the cute one on the couch), and knowing which collar theyā€™re wearing.
