I've just completed the designing needed to carry on with the construction of the saddle. The top and left designs are the rear jockey and bottom fender, respectively. The bottom design is for the swell/fork. In the design, the top leaf and the four scrolls on the left is the top front of the swell (as you are sitting in the saddle - left side of the swell). The flower will be centered on top of the swell, between the horn (at the top of the picture) and the swell lacing (bottom of the picture). The reverse of this design will be carved on the right side of the swell (as you are sitting in the saddle).

There will be one more design to create once the seat has been installed. This will be for the cantle binding leather. I cannot create that design until I have the dimensions of the binding leather.

The next steps will be to transfer the designs to the leather and then actually carve them.

I've got the rear jockey design completed, finally. It takes a while, especially when you are not concentrating on what you are doing and have to start over. 🥲🤒

It's ok though.... I set the fender corner above the jockey so that you can compare the two.

I have one more design to do before I can continue with the saddle. That will be for the swell/fork... I will begin working that tomorrow!

So, things have slowed a bit on the custom saddle, because I am now to the point where I have to begin the tooling/carving process. This saddle will be partially tooled with the Cheyenne style floral designs. See the following pictures.

Once the seat dried from last week, I needed to some final trimming. This had to be done after taking the seat off. Additionally, I removed the skirts and prepared them to receive saddle strings and shearling. However, that will not happen until after I have fitted and sized the rear jockeys.

Today's actual progress on the saddle was the installation of the cantle back leather and the cantle filler. as shown in the pictures. The back of the cantle on this saddle will have a 2" wide Cheyene roll (great for a hand-hold). Once the leather is dry, I will remove the tacks and do some "finnessing" of the leather inside the cantle to ensure it is as flat (cantle-shaped) as possible. Then it will be cemented to the inside of the cantle and re-tacked.

End of the week progress on the custom saddle.....

Both pictures show that the skirts and seat have been installed for initial fitting. The skirts are dry and needed to be in place so that the seat could be properly fitted. The seat is tacked in place with the draw-down strap tightened to form the seat to the ground seat.

I'll leave the seat to dry over the weekend and get back to it next week.

I missed out on reporting on the progress of the custom saddle yesterday, as I took the needed time to actually cut out parts of the saddle that I would be needing in the near future. I cut the swell cover, seat, skirts, rear jockeys, and saddle strings.

Today was the day to install the swell cover....take a look at the picture....

On my Dad's boots, the only thing I did today was to remove the heel block and the insole from the uppers. Once I receive the last that will fit this boot, I can begin reassembly.

I did work on the custom saddle today.... The rigging is completely installed...please see the following pictures for more information.

As I was literally waiting for glue to dry on the saddle, I began work on my father's boots (repair). He purchased these boots in the early 80's and has had them resoled once. I intend to re-sole them and install new heel caps. Please see the pictures for more information.
