🚨 IF YOU CAN’T SEE A DIFFERENCE… IT MAY BE TIME TO FIND SOMEONE NEW. 🚨
At Klepinger Equine Dentistry & Nutrition, we believe horse owners should be able to see and understand the difference professional care is making.
🦷 DENTISTRY:
Whether you choose an equine veterinarian who performs dentistry or a qualified lay equine dental provider where permitted, there should be a reason for what is being done.
After appropriate dental work, you should be able to see and/or feel a difference in the mouth. Sharp enamel points, hooks, ramps, overgrowths, imbalances and other abnormalities should not simply be “worked on” with no meaningful correction.
Ask questions.
Look at the mouth when possible.
Ask what was found.
Ask what was corrected.
Ask what needs to be monitored.
If visit after visit you cannot tell that anything has changed, it is okay to question whether you are getting the level of care your horse needs.
🥕 NUTRITION IS NO DIFFERENT.
The term “equine nutritionist” gets used very loosely.
A qualified nutrition professional should have substantial education in equine nutrition, digestion, nutrient requirements, forage evaluation and ration formulation and should be able to explain why every recommendation is being made.
Your nutrition program should not automatically become:
“Use this brand.”
“Buy this entire supplement line.”
“Switch every horse to this one feed.”
A horse does not have a favorite feed company.
A good nutrition program evaluates the HORSE FIRST:
• Age
• Weight and body condition
• Workload
• Forage analysis and forage intake
• Dental ability
• Metabolic status
• Medical history
• Current feed and supplements
• Protein and amino acids
• Vitamins and minerals
• Calories
• Individual goals
And whenever possible, your nutrition professional should be able to evaluate products independently instead of being financially or professionally tied to selling one brand.
Sometimes the best recommendation may be Brand A.
Sometimes it may be Brand B.
Sometimes it may mean removing half the supplements you are currently buying.
That is what independent nutrition means.
📚 Look for education.
🔬 Look for evidence based recommendations.
📊 Look for someone who can actually evaluate the entire ration.
🐴 And most importantly look for someone whose loyalty is to YOUR HORSE, not a marketing department.
Whether we are talking about teeth or nutrition, the goal should never be to simply “do something.”
The goal is measurable improvement in the horse.
