🐔💨 The Great Chicken Treat Dash!

Every flock has its own personalities.

There's the hen who hears the treat bag from across the yard.

The one who comes running at full speed, wings flapping like she's about to take flight.

The sneaky one who hangs back until everyone else is distracted.

And, of course, the bossy hen who seems convinced that every single mealworm belongs to her. 😂

We know we're not the only ones who get a kick out of watching chickens lose their minds over treat time!

📸 Show us your flock's best treat-time moments!

Whether it's a full-speed chicken stampede, a hilarious expression, or your favorite feathered friend patiently waiting for a snack, we'd love to see them.

Drop your photos in the comments and let's see those mealworm-loving personalities! 🐛💛

Whether you're rewarding your flock, encouraging a little extra foraging, or just enjoying the excitement of treat time, Henny Penny Mealworms are an easy way to make their day.

And because every flock is a little different, we offer five convenient sizes:

🐛 What's the Big Deal About Mealworms? 🐔

If you've ever offered your chickens a handful of mealworms, you probably already know the answer. One minute, the flock is peacefully scratching around the yard. The next? It's a full blown chicken stampede. 😂

But what makes these little treats so popular?

🌾 They're naturally rich in protein. Dried mealworms are a concentrated source of protein, which chickens use for feather growth, tissue maintenance, and everyday body functions.

🐛 They're a familiar kind of snack. Chickens are natural foragers, always on the lookout for insects and other interesting things to investigate. Mealworms tap right into those instincts.

🐓 They make treat time more interesting. Toss a few around the run and watch your flock get busy searching, scratching, and pecking.

And while mealworms are a fun addition to your flock's routine, they're best offered as an occasional treat alongside their regular feed.

So, we're curious: Does your flock come running when the mealworms come out, or do you have a few picky eaters? 👀

🍂 A Little Harvest in Every Bowl
Seeds. Grains. Fruits. Nuts. Vegetables.
Individually, they're simple ingredients. Bring them together, and suddenly there's an entire bowl for a curious bird to explore.
This week we've looked at the variety inside companion bird blends, explored Avian Science, discovered some very opinionated bird favorites, and learned how to recognize a few familiar ingredients.
But our favorite part is still watching the birds themselves.
The careful picker.
The enthusiastic cruncher.
The one who throws half the bowl on the floor looking for one particular seed. 😅
And, of course, the one who makes it very clear when today's selection does not meet expectations.
Every bird approaches the bowl a little differently—and that's part of the fun of knowing them.
🌾 From harvest to home, here's to another week of happy birds and well-loved bowls. 🦜🍁

🔎 How Well Do You Know What's in the Bowl?
You probably recognize sunflower seeds immediately—but what about safflower? Millet? Oat groats? Buckwheat?
Many of the ingredients we see written on a bird food label can look very different once they're sitting together in the bowl.
🌻 Safflower — a smooth, pale seed with a firm outer hull
🌾 Millet — small, round seeds commonly found in companion bird blends
🥣 Oat Groats — the whole oat kernel with the outer hull removed
🌱 Buckwheat — a distinctive, angular seed-like grain that's fairly easy to spot once you know what you're looking for
🎃 Hulled Pumpkin Seed — the familiar green inner portion of a pumpkin seed
Learning to recognize ingredients can make that little ingredient statement on the back of the bag feel a whole lot less mysterious.
Next time you fill your bird's bowl, take a closer look. How many ingredients can you identify? 🔍🦜

❤️ Every Bird Has a Favorite
You fill the bowl with a beautiful mixture of ingredients.....and your bird immediately starts searching for that one piece. 😂
You know the one.
Maybe it's a sunflower seed. A piece of fruit. A peanut. A pumpkin seed. A tiny millet seed. Or something completely unexpected.
Today we want to hear from the people who know their birds best:
🦜 If your bird could build their own blend, what would be in it?
Tell us their must-have ingredient in the comments—and we'd love to see a photo of the little food critic behind the choice! 📸

🦜 A Harvest for Every Bird: Meet Avian Science
Canaries and finches don't eat quite like cockatiels. Cockatiels don't eat quite like parrots. And anyone who shares their home with a bird knows that individual birds can have some pretty strong opinions about what's in their bowl!
That's why the Avian Science line includes blends created with different types and sizes of companion birds in mind.
Across the line, you'll find an assortment of familiar seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients selected to create blends suited to the birds they're intended for.
From the tiniest finch picking through small seeds to a parrot cracking into something much larger, there's a lot of variety hiding inside those bags.
🌾 Different birds. Different blends. A harvest of choices.
Do you have an Avian Science blend in your bird's food bowl?

🌾 A Harvest for Every Bird: Why So Much Variety?
Take a look inside a companion bird blend and you may find quite the assortment—seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and more.
That variety isn't just interesting to look at. Different ingredients bring different sizes, shapes, textures, and flavors to the bowl, giving birds plenty to explore as they eat.
Think about how birds interact with their food, too. Some carefully pick through their bowl for a favorite seed. Others love cracking, shelling, holding, or nibbling their way through larger pieces. That variety can make mealtime an activity all its own.
This week, we're celebrating A Harvest for Every Bird by taking a closer look at the ingredients, blends, and little preferences that make every bird's bowl unique. 🌻🦜
Tomorrow, we'll take a look at our Avian Science line and some of the different blends made with different birds in mind.

Some great advice from our friends at Guardians of Nature.

Some great advice from our friends at Guardians of Nature.

All month, the advice was the same. Do less.
Leave the cutting. Leave the bagging. Leave what doesn't need rescuing. Flip one switch off.

Here's who showed up.

🌾 You left the seed heads standing.
Goldfinches found them. They cling to the dry coneflowers and work the seeds loose, and the seeds they drop will feed sparrows and juncos on the ground later in the fall. The stems you didn't cut became a feeder nobody has to fill.

🪵 You left the brush pile in the back corner.
Rabbits and toads slipped underneath. When the juncos show up, it's their cover from hawks and storms too.

🍂 You let the first fallen leaves lie.
Bumble bee queens spend the winter just under that layer. Luna moth cocoons ride it out wrapped in the leaves themselves.

🦋 You left the asters blooming.
Monarchs fueled up. The ones passing through are the long-lived fall generation, many of them bound for the mountains of Mexico, and each late flower is a fuel stop on the way.

🐢 You found a hatchling turtle and let it keep its heading.
If it was on the road, you set it down on the far side, still facing forward. It walked on toward water it had never seen.

💡 You turned the porch light off on migration nights.
The birds traveling in the dark passed over an unlit yard and kept going.

None of it took a trip to the store. Most of it was less work than the chore it replaced.

October comes next. In much of the North the leaves come down in earnest and the first frosts arrive, and all of this matters more, not less. Keep the stems up till spring. Let the leaves lie where they land. Leave the pile where it is.

The messy yard won September. 🌿
