Allow me to introduce Lady Sassafras, a.k.a. Miss Sassy! 🥰🐾

September 28, 2012, was the date I brought my sweet departed Henry Flagler home from the Florida Keys SPCA. For more than nine years, he was my companion and my joy.

Fast-forward to last Monday, September 28, 2026, when I received a call from the FKSPCA about a cute little girl dog. It was the exact date 14 years later. If that isn’t a sign, I don’t know what is!

Since then, I’ve been visiting her at the shelter, getting to know her to make sure it’s a good fit. One thing I learned is that she has a strong little personality. Sassy is definitely the right name! She was known as Echo at the shelter, but she’s starting her new life with a brand new name. I could also have named her Sugar, because she is such a sweet little thing. 🥰

She’s met several of her neighbors already, strutting around the neighborhood chasing lizards. She’s having a grand time, enjoying all the pets and attention.

The SPCA said she’s about 5 years old and seems to be a mix of Maltese, poodle, and Shih Tzu – but I’ll find out for sure after the DNA test. She’s housebroken and very curious. Every corner of every room in my house has had the once-over at least three times. 😀 She was confiscated as part of an animal cruelty case, which breaks my heart.

I also learned that Miss Sassy is a treat fiend - making her the perfect candidate for her new role as Chief Quality Control Officer for Henry’s Barkalicious Dog Treats. Yay!

Please join me in welcoming, Miss Sassy to our corner of the island and to her exciting new life. Here’s to many years with this sweet pup. Rescue will always be my favorite breed!
