Yesterday, we mentioned that we took on two very special cases from our friends at Kershaw County Humane Society. Everyone, please meet Goldie (Goldilocks) and Aspen.
Goldie is a Golden Retriever pupper dupper who was surrendered to KCHS in rough shape. She is extremely underweight and covered in mats, but the moment I saw her, I asked if we could foster her, get her vetted, get her groomed, and help her become the dog she deserves to be. Thankfully, we got the green light.
While Dr. T from Topgun Veterinarian Service, LLC was busy helping tackle the largest TNR clinic we've ever held, I asked her to evaluate both Goldie and Aspen.
Aspen came into our lives thanks to "the other Tom."
Tom was walking through KCHS to spray out a cat trap when he came back and asked, "Did you see the pup in there? She makes Goldie look fat."
We went to see her.
I honestly don't know how else to say it—it kind of broke me inside.
Every bone was visible. Her body condition score is essentially a zero. She could walk a little, but despite everything she has endured, her spirit was still shining. Her tail never stopped wagging.
We asked the shelter staff, director, and assistant director if the girls could stay together, and everyone agreed there was no reason they couldn't. So both girls came home with us.
Now the real work begins.
Our friend Ariel, who comes out every 6–8 weeks to work her grooming magic on Van, trim cats when needed, and tackle the dreaded nail trims that Tom and I avoid at all costs, has agreed to give Goldie a much-needed makeover and see what miracles she can perform.
Over the next 6–8 weeks, our goal is simple: good food, good veterinary care, lots of love, and a chance for both girls to heal. We'll be working to get them to healthy weights, evaluating their temperaments (which, by the way, are absolutely wonderful so far), and figuring out whether they are destined for amazing adoptive homes or whether they become foster failures.
Honestly, the jury is still out on that last part.
Please stay tuned as we share their journey. We can't wait for everyone to watch these girls transform and finally experience the lives they deserve.
A huge thank you to Dr. T, Clarissa, Christian, Raina, Joe, and all of the Kershaw County Humane Society staff who helped make this possible. It truly takes a village, and we are so grateful for every single one of you.
Now let's get these girls healthy. ❤️
