Funny how your taste changes the longer you’re into chickens… 😍🐓

When I first started, I was ALL about the blues and splashes. Those were hands-down my favorites.

But as time has gone on… BLACK has completely won me over. 🖤 There is just something about that gorgeous beetle-green/iridescent sheen when the light hits black feathers that has me absolutely google-eyed. 😍✨

And then there’s the Ermine Ameraucana… that black-and-white feathering with those little flashes of green sheen?! 🤌

Seriously, look at these two.

The feathering. The color. The sheen. CHEF’S KISS. 🤌😘🐓

I may raise them for those beautiful blue eggs, but sometimes I just stand there admiring the chickens themselves. 😂💙🥚

we’re starting an orchard now. 😂🍎🍐

A couple weeks ago, while getting goat and chicken feed, we stopped at Middlefield Seed and Jason discovered their apple and pear trees at prices that were WAY too good to pass up. Of course that meant we had to go back. 😂

Today we came home with 4 apple trees and 2 pear trees to add to the homestead. 🍎🍐 And because apparently six fruit trees weren’t enough, I found myself a little apple mint to plant along the walkway. 🌿❤️

Some of the trees already have fruit on them, which somehow makes me even more excited!

Little by little, we keep adding things that will feed our family for years to come. Chickens, goats, gardens… and now an orchard. ❤️

At this point, Jason and I really shouldn’t be allowed to go anywhere that sells plants, animals OR farm supplies together. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

And today’s episode of “Why Are My Chickens Like This?” 😂🐓

Me: Why are my Ameraucanas OUTSIDE their pen?! 👀

Also me after zooming in…

Oh. Because SOMEONE left the fence open. 🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem, it’s me. 😂

And there they are just casually enjoying their unexpected freedom like, “We assumed this was intentional.” 💅🐓

At least they didn’t go far… apparently I run a self-service free-range program now. 🤣

LOOK WHAT WE HAVE HERE! 😍🥚💙

Walked out to check the Ameraucana pen and THERE IT WAS… our beautiful blue egg! 💙

Apparently the Ameraucana girls are officially clocking in! 🎉🐓

Meanwhile, one of my Silverrudd Blue hens decided her own pen wasn’t good enough, jumped into the Ameraucana pen, and was casually hanging out like she belonged there. 😂🤦‍♀️

Ma’am… you have your own house. Please go home.

But can we just appreciate that BLUE?! 😍 This is exactly what we’ve been waiting for from this pen.

“Why do you own goats?” 🐐

Ummm… how else am I supposed to get semi-free entertainment?! 😂

Today’s episode: Mic vs. the outside cat house.

Mic: I can fit.
Also Mic: I have made a terrible mistake. 🤦‍♀️🤣

I say semi-free because anyone who owns goats knows there is absolutely NOTHING free about owning goats. 😂💸

But the entertainment? Top tier. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WRESTLEMANIA: Cane Corso Edition 🤼‍♀️🐾😂

Apparently this cool, cloudy, rainy morning has Stoney and Aria feeling some type of way.

Forget sleeping in. Forget peacefully enjoying the cooler weather.

These two woke up and chose WRESTLEMANIA. 😂

A break from the heat = FULL BATTERIES RECHARGED. 🔋🐾 And when you have two Cane Corsos, apparently the living room becomes the ring.

In this corner… STONEY!
And in the other… ARIA!
LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEE! 🤣

Remember those beautiful eggs I washed yesterday? 😍🥚🌈

Well… this is why. ❤️

Grandma always said, “Your food should look as good as it tastes,” and I think she’d be pretty proud of this one.

Farm-fresh eggs straight from our girls, made into breakfast for my kiddo and husband because apparently I’ve made it my personal mission to make sure these two are completely spoiled. 😂❤️

But that’s how I love people — I feed them. And when you can feed them with something you raised right in your own backyard, it just hits a little differently. 🐓🥚❤️

When the sky makes you stop mid-chore just to watch… ❤️

No filter. No editing. Just an Ohio summer evening putting on one heck of a show over the homestead.

I swear, some of the best views aren’t the ones you travel to see—they’re the ones that happen right in your own backyard. 🌾🐓🌅

Mother Nature understood the assignment tonight. 😍

Fair week casualties: the garden. 😂🌱🎡

The garden was just a touch neglected while we were living at the fair last week. Tonight we finally got back in there for some much-needed pruning, cutting back, cleaning up and fertilizing in hopes of giving everything one last hurrah before the season winds down! 🌱🍅

And apparently the garden wasn’t holding a grudge because even after a week of neglect, it still gave us a pretty darn good haul tonight! 😍

Tomatoes, green beans, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and that BEAUTIFUL eggplant. 🍆🍅🥒🌶️

Now to figure out what we’re eating fresh and what is headed for the canning jars. 😂❤️

The girls may be slowing down, but they sure haven’t stopped showing off. 😍🥚🌈

It’s been a little HOT lately ☀️ and we’re getting to that time of year when egg production naturally starts slowing down a bit.

But even with fewer eggs in the basket, they’re still giving us one heck of a pretty collection! 💙💚🤎🩷

I’ll take quality over quantity when the basket looks this good. 😂🐓❤️
