The stable flies finally lost the fight. Ice studs and snow pads are going on the ponies that are staying in Maine this winter. Fitz’s Forge had a great season! With Claudia’s ever growing skill set and comfort under the animals we have grown much quicker. Making it hard for our clients to keep up! Sorry for that! We know it can be tough when we show up early and are done fast. But with this swiftness the ponies are happier and we have felt comfortable taking on a few new clients this year. I so enjoy watching our routine customers succeed but taking on new projects and watching animals improve this year has been a blast. Small simple improvements in balance and support we are seeing horses with better foundations which means stronger feet straighter limbs, happy owners with blue ribbons and/or more comfortable days in the pasture/trail. I have seen many tears of joy when an owner can see their animal become more comfortable before their eyes then imporove at the job over the following months.
This farrier gig is a blessing and I am so excited to pass it on. I’ve always thought the panicle of an art or craft is when you are comfortable enough to teach others. I also get to see myself learn and grow in my craft as I try to communicate it to a young mind. Claudia has been taking on barefoot horses on her own and working with a farrier in NH to expand her knowledge base, she is already shaping and nailing on shoes with me!
The new smiling face some of you have met is Grace Connor. The “Tuesday girl” Grace is heading off to Kentucky Horse shoeing school in January. Which is where my journey began nearly 15 years ago. We are excited for her return and to hear all she has learned. Fitz’s Forge feels like we will be able to continue to grow and service southern Maine for years to come! 🐎

I have never heard the term Volar plain. As Mark said not many people have, and I will have to do some research on it. But this video has some great take aways, and does a nice job discussing some of the physiology of the hoof in layman’s terms. This is why the back half of the foot and proper blood flow throughout the foot is so important!

Hi all. I just wanted to notify my clients of a great learning opportunity! Palmar and Plantar angles are something you hear myself and your Veterinarian mention often. We have some external signs but this is something best viewed with an exray. Simply put it is how the coffin bone is sitting inside the hoof capsule, it’s relationship with the ground and the animal above it. The Maine Farriers Association.
