𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗨𝗧𝗬!

I've completed my latest assignment, and now I'm ready to embark on the biggest adventure of my life: 𝗜'𝗠 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘!

After months of intensive field training, woodland expeditions, and extensive research into the comfiest places to nap, I'm officially accepting applications for a 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗡𝗘𝗥!

You might remember me from my time as a Woodland Wanders adventure pup. I was a young Agent with a LOT of enthusiasm, some pretty big feelings, and enough energy to power a small village.

Fortunately, headquarters recognized my potential and helped me secure a very special assignment with my foster human, Jamie.

And let me tell you, fellow Agents, this guy understood the assignment!

We've been working on my confidence, practicing all sorts of fancy skills, exploring the great outdoors, and making sure I get plenty of opportunities to put my brilliant little brain to work.

Apparently, I'm something of a genius. Jamie says I'm even smarter than his own dog, but I'm pretty sure that's classified information. 🤫

𝗠𝗬 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗡𝗘𝗫𝗧 𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧:

I'm looking for an experienced, adventure-loving human who appreciates a clever canine partner and enjoys getting outside as much as I do.

Five-mile woodland expedition? SIGN ME UP!

Learning new skills together? ABSOLUTELY!

Coming home afterward and snoozing peacefully while you go about your business? I'm already asleep.

I do best when I have plenty of exercise, opportunities to explore, consistent guidance, and a human who enjoys working with me. My foster human has taught me a whole collection of impressive skills, including off-leash recalls, and it's important that my new partner is committed to maintaining my training and outdoor adventures.

I'm also a sensitive soul. New situations can make me a little shy, and sometimes my excitement about other dogs gets the better of me. I've made tremendous progress, but I'll need someone patient who understands that even the best Agents are always learning.

I could be perfectly happy as your one and only canine sidekick, or I might enjoy sharing headquarters with a compatible, socially gentle dog.

𝗔 𝗙𝗘𝗪 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗗𝗘𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗦:

I'm spayed, healthy, vaccinated, microchipped, house-trained, crate-trained, and have excellent indoor manners.

My foster human is hoping to find someone who will continue giving me the wonderful life I've been learning to love. He'd especially like to find a local home so we can get to know each other gradually, and he'll be available to help my new human learn all my training cues.

There is a small adoption fee, and applicants will need to meet my placement requirements.

Some dogs should never meet at all.
And saying that doesn't make you mean. It makes you the one who is paying attention.

A bouncy, in-your-face teenager and a shut-down, disinterested, low-energy dog?
A dog who's had very few good experiences with other dogs and a dog who wants to take on and wrestle the world?

That's not an introduction.
That's a setup.

I know, there's so much pressure to get it perfect.
Pressure from friends and family to meet their dog.

You can say yes. There just needs to be a bit of prep first.

What we do need to be wary of is setting them up. And not in the good way.
Certain things do need caution. They can create competition before there's even trust. And that's a longer road you really don't want.

Parallel walks are still my favourite. Same direction. Enough space that both dogs can breathe. No forced hellos. Sometimes it's one walk. Sometimes it's a few. Both are completely normal.

If your last intro went sideways and got barky, stressy and messy, that doesn't mean your dog failed.

Maybe the situation failed your dog.
And next time, you get to do it differently. Or not at all.

Both can be the right answer.

It's that time of year when the humans lose their minds, stuff us into ridiculous outfits, and insist we look *adorable*.

Naturally, I'm a seasoned professional at this sort of thing.

Woodland Wanders is sponsoring the prizes this year, so the best-dressed dogs will be going home with more than just bragging rights! Personally, I think every dog deserves a reward for putting up with their human's creative ambitions, but apparently there has to be a competition.

🏆 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲 – Bonus points if you make a human scream.

🏆 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲 – For those of you who prefer psychological manipulation through excessive adorableness.

🏆 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗲 – Because some humans have entirely too much imagination, and we dogs are the ones who pay for it.

I've been before, and it's always a spooktacular time! Plenty of competition to size up and humans to keep in line. So suit up, show off, and see if you've got what it takes to bring home a prize!

𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗷𝗼 might even be joining me this year! The rookie's already been recruited for costume testing. He has no idea what he's signed up for😏

As for our costumes?
The details of this operation remain classified, but I hear there may be a 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 for the first human who can figure out who we're supposed to be. You'll have to find us at the event and make your guess!

Here's your only hint: Some secrets are best uncovered between the pages of a book. Those who've ventured into other worlds might recognize a thing or two. 📚

𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡, 𝗖𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗦. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗥𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦.

The Adventure Human spent several years moonlighting at Monadnock Humane Society while also running Woodland Wanders. Apparently managing one collection of dogs was insufficient.

She walked shelter dogs, worked with the ones who needed a little extra help navigating human society, taught new dog-walking volunteers the ropes, and participated in something called Puppy Playschool — which, frankly, sounds less like volunteer work and more like an elaborate scheme to gain access to puppies.

I remain suspicious.

Now MHS is looking for morning volunteers to help care for the cats and small animals. Feeding. Cleaning. Fresh water. General creature maintenance.

It may not be glamorous work, but shelter volunteers make a very real difference in an animal’s day — and the Adventure Human can personally confirm that some pretty incredible animals are waiting on the other side of those kennel doors.

Apparently, the humans are excited because the woods are changing colors.

We investigated.

The leaves are crunchier. The trails smell excellent. There are fresh sticks everywhere. Several squirrels remain at large.

Overall, we agree this is a very scenic time of year, although the Adventure Human keeps stopping us in perfectly good sniffing locations to say things like, "Wait, Don't move. The light is pretty"

We moved.

Anyway, here are a few of this week's Woodland Wanders field reports from the forest.

The talented Green Mountain Iron Dog photographers have released the photographic evidence, and I have selected my favorite.

Not because I look particularly majestic, although obviously I do.
Because this one pretty much sums up what the course was all about:
𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞.

This was 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗢𝗟.

It was, in fact, enormous.

The Adventure Human climbed up first. I followed with considerably more enthusiasm than leg length. I climbed, jumped, scrabbled, and when I got as high as I could, trusted her to catch me and haul the rest of me aboard.

Once safely on top, I climbed directly into her lap because she had apparently mistaken the top of the spool for a 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮.

I was motivating my teammate. 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗕𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗦.

On the way down, the Adventure Human went first and got into position.
I dove straight into her arms.
She caught me.
Obviously.
𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱.

And that was pretty much the deal. I gave every obstacle everything I had. When I needed her, she was there.

See? The Adventure Human is very trainable.

Green Mountain Iron Dog : CRUSHED.

Two miles of obstacles and an impressive number of professional dogs who appeared to have actual résumés.

Adventure Human was concerned that my feelings about being surrounded by other dogs would be our biggest challenge.

There were dogs EVERYWHERE. In front of me. Behind me. Coming toward me from the side and head-on. Calm dogs, excited dogs, and dogs having some big feelings of their own.
I yelled at exactly ZERO of them.

ZERO.

Turns out I can mind my own business when properly compensated.

Even passing them on the trail between obstacles, Adventure Human said "on by," and I simply... on by'd.

Who knew.

I did unleash the velociraptor at the starting line, but this has been unfairly entered into the record as "screaming." I could see the tunnel. The course was RIGHT THERE. There was absolutely no reason we should still be standing around discussing it.

RELEASE ME!

Once they finally did, I was magnificent.

I flew through tunnels, scrambled over things, crawled under things, splashed through the water, charged down a beach, and tackled every new obstacle with the enthusiasm of a dog who had just discovered someone built an entire playground specifically for her.

Adventure Human tried to keep up.
This is where we discovered that my feelings about other dogs were, in fact, NOT our biggest challenge.
Adventure Human needs a thing called "cardio."

I tried pulling harder.

There was also a tire run, which Adventure Human somehow managed to face-plant her way through several times before I finally convinced her to go around.

Clearly one of us needs more obstacle training before next year.

Because there WILL be a next year.

I had the BEST time.

Next year, I'm coming back for the competitive group.
In a tutu.
Like the Redneck Malinois I was born to be.
And we're bringing the Agents of C.H.A.O.S.

𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧.

On Saturday, September 26th, I will be crossing state lines to associate with law enforcement. Please remain calm.

The Green Mountain Iron Dog is a 1.5-mile mystery course originally designed to challenge police K9 teams with obstacles inspired by things they might encounter in the field.

And now they let civilians do it.
𝗔 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.
Obviously, I registered.

What we know: 1.5 miles. Unknown obstacles. Actual police K9s.
What we don't know: Literally anything else.
This seems like an irresponsible amount of information to give me.

There will also be highly trained, serious working dogs.
And me...
What could go wrong? No foreseeable complications there.

𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦:

Adventure Human has been making me do Kennel to 5K because apparently I am “not supposed to be shaped like a potato.”

Bold criticism from someone participating in the same program.

Anyway, Operation Iron Menace is for a good cause: the Green Mountain Iron Dog raises money to support Vermont State Police K9s, and civilian dog-and-human teams can join us on the course.

So, who else is making questionable recreational decisions for a good cause?
