🐴 THAT SMELL ISN’T “JUST HORSE.” 👀

You pick your horse’s feet and notice a nasty smell coming from the frog…

🚩 Don’t ignore it. It could be thrush.

Thrush is an infection that commonly affects the frog and can become painful if left untreated.

What should you look for?
🐎 Strong, foul odor
🐎 Black or crumbly material around the frog
🐎 Deep cracks or grooves in the frog
🐎 A soft or deteriorating frog
🐎 Sensitivity when the hoof is picked out

🌧️ Muddy conditions, wet stalls, poor hoof hygiene, and deep or contracted hoof structures can all contribute to an environment where thrush can thrive.

The good news? Catching it early is much easier than dealing with a painful, advanced problem later.

👉 Pick those feet EVERY DAY.
It only takes a few minutes and gives you a chance to notice changes before they become bigger problems.

And remember—your farrier isn’t just there to trim the hoof. We’re also looking at the overall condition of the hoof and helping you catch potential problems early.

🐴 Progress, Not Perfection 🐴

These photos weren’t taken after one trim—they’re the result of 4–5 consistent trims.

When a horse has long toes, excess hoof wall, or imbalance, it isn’t something that should be “fixed” in a single appointment. Removing too much hoof at once can make a horse uncomfortable and place unnecessary stress on the tendons, ligaments, joints, and internal structures of the foot.

Instead, we make gradual corrections by:
✔️ Shortening the toe a little at each visit.
✔️ Encouraging a stronger, healthier hoof capsule.
✔️ Improving hoof balance over time.
✔️ Allowing the horse’s internal structures to adapt safely.

Every trim builds on the last one.

The goal isn’t just to make the hoof look better—it’s to help the horse move more comfortably while supporting long-term hoof health.

Remember:
You can’t grow a healthy hoof overnight, and you shouldn’t try to remove months of growth in one trim. Consistency is what creates lasting results.

What is corrected:

✅ Toe length is shorter and the excessive leverage has been reduced.

✅ The hoof wall is more upright with less flare visible.

✅ The feet appear more balanced medial-to-lateral (inside to outside).

✅ Breakover should be improved, decreasing strain on the deep digital flexor tendon and coffin joint.

✅ The hoof-pastern axis appears more appropriate from what can be assessed from this angle.

What still stands out:

* There is some residual flare and stretched wall that will likely grow out over the next few trim cycles.
* The feet still appear somewhat boxy and could benefit from maintaining a 4–6 week schedule rather than waiting until they become long again.
* A side view and sole picture would better assess heel support and whether additional toe backing is needed.

Why this matters:

By shortening the toes and restoring balance, you reduce:

* Tendon and ligament strain.
* Excess stress on the coffin and pastern joints.
* Risk of cracks and white line separation.
* Stumbling and shortened stride.
* Development of chronic lameness.

What is wrong with these feet?

* Long toes: The hoof wall extends well beyond the sole plane.
* Flares at the toe: The wall is stretching outward rather than growing straight down.
* Cracks and separation: Excess leverage on the hoof wall causes splitting.
* Delayed breakover: The horse has to work harder to lift the foot, increasing stress on tendons and joints.

How to fix it

✔ Regular trims every 4–6 weeks (possibly shorter intervals initially).

✔ Back the toe up gradually to restore a more natural breakover point.

✔ Remove flare and excess wall length while preserving sole depth and maintaining heel support.

✔ Monitor for white line stretching or thrush, which often accompany overgrown feet.

✔ Provide good footing and nutrition, since strong hoof growth depends on both management and diet.

Why is this important?

Ignoring overgrown feet can lead to:

* Cracked hooves.
* White line disease.
* Tendon and ligament strain.
* Increased stress on the coffin and pastern joints.
* Shortened stride and soreness.
* Greater risk of stumbling.
* Long-term lameness and changes higher up in the limb.

How fast does a horses hooves grow?

We’re asked this frequently so here’s a little bit of info…

A horse’s hooves grow continuously, much like human fingernails.

🐴 Average growth rate:

* About ¼–⅜ inch (6–10 mm) per month.
* A completely new hoof wall takes approximately 9–12 months to grow from the coronary band to the ground.

🐴 Most horses need trimming every:

* 4–8 weeks, depending on:
* Age
* Diet and overall health
* Exercise level
* Time of year (hooves often grow faster in spring and summer)
* Whether the horse is barefoot or shod

🐐Goats and sheep also have continuously growing hooves and generally need trimming every 6–12 weeks, though frequency varies with terrain and activity.

Signs that a hoof may need trimming include:

* Long or flared walls
* Chipping or cracking
* Toes becoming elongated
* Changes in gait or stumbling.
