Platte Valley Retrievers Platte Valley Retrievers is a training kennel that specializes in gun dog and hunt test training The kennel is located at my home north of Kearney, NE.

As a dog lover and avid sportsmen I have spent my whole life around hunting retrievers. My early experience stems from the first Platte Valley Retrievers, a large kennel my parents operated throughout the 90's. They specialized in well bred retrievers including Labradors, Chesapeake's, and Golden's. My passion for working with these animals grew over time and now I am doing it professionally. The

facilities are safe, clean, and about 30 yds from my house so the dogs are under constant supervision. I specialize in gun dog training and hunt test training. Basic gun dog training is a minimum of four months, maybe longer depending on the individual dog. By the end of the training program the retriever will be obedient to the command and to the whistle. They will retrieve marked birds up to 100 yds away and will deliver them to hand. They will also be able to pass a HRC Started Hunt Test. My fee is $650/month for a minimum 4 month training program.

We throw a lot of singles. It may seem too easy for experienced dogs, but something as simple as the scent from an old mark can trip them up and cause them to lose momentum. After we practice this enough, they learn the difference between a fresh scent and an old scent, even if it’s only a few minutes old.

Introduction to the gunshot, we start about 100 yards away and then work our way closer as the dog gets comfortable to the sound of the shot. This method has never failed if the dog has strong retrieving desire.

Now taking reservations for June and later

This year marks 10 years that we have been in business. Hard to believe how far we have come, from using an old barn for kennels, rented house and a borrowed Hay meadow for all of our training. To owning all of our own equipment our own property and our own pond. And being so busy that we’ve had to hire some part-time help. It’s hard to keep track, but I think we’ve trained about 200 dogs over the last 10 years, focusing on quality over quantity. Thank you to all of our customers and to the many repeat customers that have made this business a success. 

A very special, thank you to all of the members of the Great Plains Hunting Retriever Club that taught me more about training dogs, and about this business, than I could ever have learned on my own.

It is very satisfying to see a young dog toward the end of their training. This particular female has been consistently running these long retrieves the last couple weeks of her training and she has been doing it with confidence and excitement. She started off shy with lower than average retrieving desire. Time and patience has paid off for her and she should turn into an excellent gun dog for her owner.

This will be one hard charging dog. Big big motor, I would love the opportunity to train this guy

I have a fully trained ready to hunt 2 year old female German Shorthair looking for a new home. I have hunted her several times this season and she will make someone an excellent hunting dog.
