A happy update on sweet Maggie! She was adopted a couple weeks ago by a UNK biology professor and her new mom reports that she is doing fabulous! She gets to help teach, so has plenty of social time with students, and is healing well from an unexpected toe amputation. Lettie also still speaks with Maggie's original owner frequently and plans to start with visits soon! We love a happy ending! 💚

As the week winds down, we just wanted to take a moment to appreciate our technicians and assistants here at West Villa! Happy Veterinary Technician week to your pet's favorite nurses, Taylor, LaNita, Alicia, and Haley! These gals do it all! They are phlebotomists, radiology techs, surgery assistants, grief counselors, groomers, animal advocates, and compassionate caregivers. Thank you, for all the skill, passion, patience, and heart you put into your work. You are cogs that keep the clinic machine running! We appreciate you every day! 💚

Dolly is our Patient of the Day! She was in for a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment today! October's Special is 10% off dental cleanings. Dolly had a dental x-ray, full scale and polish, and some tooth extractions. She is very shy. Today was, for example, the first time she let me pet her. She even gave one of our kennel assistants a little kiss on the cheek when we changed her bandage. There are a lot of products on the market to help with canine and feline oral hygiene, and it is difficult to keep their teeth healthy, because dogs have 32 adult teeth, cats have 30, all placed so close together, plaque and tartar buildup happens quickly, even with regular brushing. And if you've ever tried to brush your dog or cat's teeth, you know that regular brushing is not an easy habit to build. Dolly will be feeling much better after her visit today! Patient of the Day today is Rosie! She is dressed in her fanciest fall dress. We saw her today to update her Bordetella vaccination, and she'll come back next week for a heartworm test so we can prescribe Simparica Trio. We recommend giving a flea/tick/heartworm preventative year round, especially with the warmer winters we have had the last couple years. If you miss a dose, we will need to retest for heartworm and tick-borne diseases, because giving a preventative to a heartworm positive dog can have serious health consequences, such as massive die-off of microfilariae, in which the immediate breakdown of these worms releases large amounts of protein in the bloodstream. That can trigger anaphylactic-type or shock reaction in the dog. Most preventatives only kill off the immature life stages, so adult worms still survive, and the primary infection has not been treated. It is also significantly safer and less costly to prevent heartworms than to treat them. Thanks for choosing West Villa! 💚

Employee Pets today features Alli's dog Buckley Jordan!
💥Our 3 legged wonder dog! He is named after the guitar player for Dad's favorite band. He was adopted from the shelter at around 9 months old with a missing foot. Perhaps it was caught in a coyote trap after he and a sibling were dumped and he had to chew himself free. He lost his foot at the hock joint. After adoption, West Villa performed a high femur amputation. A DNA test reports that he is an australian shepherd/greyhound mix. He is a very sweet boy who wants to snuggle but overheats quickly. He likes to take his treats and have them in the other room. He sometimes gives us a rare smile. His exact age is unknown, but we think he is probably about 7 years old.

On October 7th, we made a post about two kittens who were found abandoned at the I-80 east bound rest stop. They are now available for adoption at Kearney Area Animal Shelter. The shelter staff named them Hazel and Honey, in case anyone following their story might like to meet them. The shelter is ALWAYS full of adoptable pets, so we encourage anyone thinking of adding a family member to check them out.

Our Patient of the Day today is Lilith! She got into a little mischief today, ate the orbies out of a toy, and came in so we could induce vomiting. In case you don't know, orbies are small plastic beads in water that, when ingested, can expand. Luckily, Lilith's mom caught it right way and brought her in immediately. We were able to get them all out. She came up and hung out with the front desk team until her mom came to pick her up. Thanks for choosing West Villa! 💚
