Adopted!! Congratulations are in order for Darling and Rascal!!!! We are running a bit behind schedule on updates, but we have fantastic news to share from their adopter. In under a week, these young ones have settled beautifully into their new home. Thank you to Kevin for giving them a loving environment, and we couldn't be more delighted for them.

NJ - Another new arrival this week. Meet little miss Mona Lisa! Not exactly clear on her back story, only about 4 months old, a previous adopter of ours asked us to take her in when she came across someone trying to give her away. The story was the person that had her couldn't keep her and her litter mates were already taken by someone. She is very sweet and extremely cuddly, a medium hair girl, and will be vetted and ready for her new family middle of April.

If you think she would be a welcome addition to your family our adoption application can be found here:

Busy as usual first chance to update! Thursday was another vet trip day for Whisper, Sox and Dulce.

Whisper, this gorgeous girl, has unbelievably been with us a year in foster!!! She went for her annual check up and rabies booster. Still looking for her new family.

Sox, who had his neuter surgery and injured foot looked at by the clinic, went to our regular vet to access the foot injury better. He does have a broken toe but is finally healing nicely.

Dulce's visit was to remove the stitches from her surgery 2 weeks ago. She is also healing very well and we can't wait to see if she still has freckles once her fur grows back in!

If you are able to contribute financially that always is a big help!

Let's talk about a somewhat controversial issue that in rescue is a no brainer... Spay/Neuter... Another related issue - that FREE puppy/kitten will cost you more than an adoption fee.

Whether you have a dog or a cat, male or female, it is equally important.
There are many life threatening situations that an in tact animals face. Let's talk amount of homes available as well as health.

Health - whether dog or cat - you "cannot afford to get fixed". We get constant requests to help those that cannot afford vet bills. And MANY of these bills are due to the fact vetting was never done in the first place at a much lower cost and at your leisure than the emergency you now face. Don't expect your lack of planning and preventive measures to become someone else's emergency at your pet’s expense and pain!

OK, you can't pay for spay - but can you afford 6 more mouths to feed and vetting? Pregnancy complications that require thousands in emergent care? Oh - you plan to give away the young without getting spayed/neutered? Very irresponsible and reason pets suffer. That is another group of animals that may go to homes that 'cannot afford to vet' and can start reproducing. Can you afford pyometra - a deadly disease females face if the uterus becomes infected and requires immediate surgery to save the animal? IF it's even diagnosed in time? Did you know pyometra can mimic pregnancy and kills many animals owned by owners that are not educated or experienced? Do you want your pet to develop numerous cancers that are avoidable that unspayed/unneutered animals can get - male or female? How about releasing kittens into the world outside to fend for themselves and having to fight for food and survival? Don't tell me your male is not a problem either outside and ready to mate... Or your dog that accidentally got out just once and got pregnant... Male in tact dogs/cats travel further to find that female in heat and get into fights then come home if you are lucky with wounds which can be costly or deadly. It's a horrendous cycle.

THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTAL LITTERS! If you are responsible your female CANNOT get pregnant. I'll say that another way - if you do not spay your female - THERE IS A CHANCE she may get pregnant regardless of how 'careful' you are!!!

Many behavior issues are solved if you pet is 'fixed'. Less animals would be surrendered for spraying (marking), strong smelling urine, aggression and guarding issues, and the list goes on....

Thousands of animals die in shelters and the animal population is out of control. You think your litter of puppies or kittens doesn't contribute to this issue? WRONG!!!!! You are basically making good homes unavailable for animals that truly need a safe home. Every puppy or kitten you send to a home means one less home for one already born and truly in need.

I cannot go into detail here - I would lose you - but if more animals are vetted properly, more will live longer and happier lives and there would be less problems with over population.

Yes - kittens and puppies are cute - but there are many already available that are growing old in foster or horrible circumstances without care - rescues are overwhelmed and you could save dozens of lives by doing the right thing and making sure you aren't part of the problem.

Rescues don't want to say we have no space, we cannot do intake, we cannot help. The truth is the fosters and fundings are always low and the costs to fix negligence is high.

Here are a few of our kittens/cats that are available - all come from the streets and are getting older in foster homes. They are completely vetted before adoption. And yes - adopting is much less expensive than taking that FREE puppy or kitten and vetting yourself. Most adoption fees do not begin to cover the amount of care that animal has already received....

All cats are neutered/spayed, FIV/FELV tested, up to date on vaccines and microchipped prior to adoption.

Indoor vs Outdoor

I'm sure you have probably seen all the posters what an indoor cat misses out on. Being stolen or trapped, lost, hit by car, ticks, worms, fleas, exposure to FIV, FELV, FIP, becoming prey to dogs or other wildlife, fights and wounds, poisoning, ringworm, and the list goes on.... These are NOT things your self proclaimed supposed street savvy cat can avoid.

I don't know about you, but honestly I don't like to see my cats go through unnecessary injuries and illness. I also can't afford to pay the high vet cost if something happens and they get ill or hurt that it was avoidable....

In rescue we get the calls. I have a cat and cannot afford____.... Or I don't know what happened but..... Another great one is he never leaves my property (until that one time he does...)

Let me introduce you to a few of our luckier adoptables and those where we've helped owners... I will not mention the ones that were beyond saving here although there were many and our heart goes out to them all.

Whisper: this young girl couldn't breathe. She followed a lady and her daughter home looking for help. She had worms and fleas, mattes all over her filthy body, and an upper respiratory infection that took months and many rounds of meds to get out of her system. She is ready for her new family now.

Breeze: Her leg was caught in a screen at 2 months old and literally dangling. The person that found her released her that way injured. She was trapped and sweet as can be through numerous treatments and surgery. She had maggots in the wound as well as fleas and worms. Completely recovered and you'd never know she has 3 legs instead of 4. Breeze is looking for her new family still.

Dulce: This girl had an open 5 inch round wound on her back. She was wandering the streets and badly needed treatment. She is still recovering and another very social girl. This could've been caused by trying to stay warm and possibly was a burn from a car... We will never know for sure.

Shylan: Caught in a fence and brought into rescue with a wound by his back leg. Treated and recovered, wants love but still learning it's safe. He's sweet but shy and needs an understanding home where he can decompress.

Neeve: Eating at a colony and when taken for spay they found heart issues. She needed testing and a cardiologist before we could put her under anesthesia. She looked healthy if thin, but would not have survived long if left outside. She is now fully vetted and looking for a home.

Sox: This guy was outside and getting picked on by other animals. He came in with ticks, fleas, multiple worms, at least 2 bite wounds and a swollen foot with a broken toe. He has now been fully vetted and still on dewormer. Fortunately he did not contract FIV or FELV but will need retesting. He had an owner, but was not yet neutered. This would have all been avoidable if neutered and indoor only. We are working with the owner to educate and get him back in good shape.

All I can say is recognize the fact that every time you open your door to your cat may be the last time you see them or they may come back with thousands of dollars in medical needs. If you give them what they need to keep them happy inside they will give you years of love.

Outdoor cats live average 2-5 years.
Indoor cats live 14-20 years.
Indoor/outdoor fall somewhere in between, they require more vetting and if they are the lucky ones won't have any serious emergency vet visits or disappear. But it is a chance you taking...
