ur-ba-vore [ûr'bə-vôr] noun
(1) any animal that consumes urban-grown foods. (2) an organism that feeds from the energy, surplus, and/or waste of a city. Move over “100 mile diet” the new local food is but a bus ride away…. Welcome to U

RBAVORE in east Kansas City - one of the nations largest, most diversified urban farmsteads - a living, breathing organism that both feeds from and provides food for its urban surroundings. Born in 2011, URBAVORE is working to create and “edible oasis” that brings organic growth, sustainable life, and creative solutions to a city neighborhood. The farm uses “Beyond Organic” practices to produce heirloom vegetables, culinary/medicinal herbs, and edible flowers noted for their unique appearance and extraordinary flavor. The fruitful future of URBAVORE holds much more than annual vegetables:

Farmers, Brooke Salvaggio and Dan Heryer (aka the “Badseeds”), are hard at work creating a wholly sustainable, off-grid farmstead that includes an organic orchard, vineyard, heritage livestock, and alternative infrastructure. This 13.5 acre farm is but 7 miles from the BADSEED downtown storefront. Come and explore the unimaginable flavors of our extensive selection of “earthly delights” on Saturdays at Brookside Farmers Market on 63rd and Wornall.

The beautiful Halley rockin’ it at today on behalf of !! This is the debut of the new market pavilion so it is PACKED with eager customers and connoisseurs of farm-fresh food!! We sent Halley with some Urbavore veggies to drive home the point that YOUR FOOD WASTE returns to the earth and becomes food once again when you compost with us!! It’s alchemy friends, and the impact of keeping those scraps out of the landfill addresses global warming and local food security simultaneously!!!😲🤯‼️It truly is mind blowing.🤷‍♀️ You can see from the photos of the Urbavore fields that our farm is lush & thriving all because of these food scraps. Our yields have more than DOUBLED since we began this venture of crafting your waste into beautiful microbial-rich compost and applying it to our fields every year. We now donate tens of thousands of dollars worth of finished compost to area growers, school gardens, farmers, non-profits, etc., and it’s become quite the social and environmental enterprise with gifts that just keep on giving (thanks microbes😉). Our one limitation is SOCIETY - meaning we need more people to embrace sustainable waste solutions and the cycling of nutrients. Composting should be happening in every single household and food enterprise throughout the country and the world. Can you imagine the impact??? - the sheer amount of “black gold” that could be applied to the land to grow nutritious, life-sustaining food??…the sheet amount of CARBON that would be sequestered from the atmosphere as these plants grow and thrive…not to mention the ginormous positive impact of cutting landfills by 40%!! Seriously, why is this such a novel thing? Let’s do this KC!! Sign-up today by visiting and hopping on our website.♻️🙏🌎

You know what I love most about “reuse” and “up cycling”? The unexpected quirks and uniqueness. Sure, saving the planet is my number one motivation, but through the act of recycling “trash” you end up with something really special that you never expected in the first place!! Take my flower sleeves for instance - I use paper grocery bags that my customers bring me…Hyvee, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etcetera. This one I made yesterday just so happened to line up perfectly with the category marked “delicate”. I thought that was pretty funny!😁 In the latter photos, you’ll see my bouquets that I do in “Cafe Demonte” coffee cans. Last year we received a pallet of expired coffee from the big Asian Market downtown. I fed the ground coffee to my blueberries and kept the hundreds of cans for this year’s “small but mighty” bouquet line that I offer every week through our online ordering. They are super cute, right??? Furthermore, all these blooms are grown in KC Food Waste cycled into nutrient-dense compost right here at Urbavore. It’s trash to treasure all around!♻️💪

Had to share this produce haul!! Trish is a loooong time customer and it is always a pleasure to see her!! I was so taken by the sheer size of her “haul” this evening that I had to snap some photos. The purple cauliflower next to the burgundy broccoli is something special.🤩

I’m so freaking proud of Sol! Now that school is out, he’s been working a couple hours per day on the farm with me and the crew - getting paid like everyone else. He’s doing a FANTASTIC job, as can be seen by his Winterbor Kale harvesting skills in these photos!!🥰 Make sure to purchase a GIANT BUNCH when visiting the online store today - live until midnight at the link in profile. *Despite my best efforts, I never could get the older one to work on the farm. I often feel like I failed miserably, but different kids have different personalities and I had to “observe, accept, and alter” when it came to my first one. We all have a lot of ideas about how we are going to raise our kids and what values we are going to instill in them - but that can quickly go out the window when you are simply in “survival mode” just trying to do the bare minimum of keeping everyone alive!!! Geez…those early tears of building this farm were HARD. I suppose Percy saw the worst of it, and we’ve all been in recovery mode ever since.😂 It’s heartwarming to see Sol thrive in it all though - a reminder that this place is good for something!!

First of the BULB FENNEL headed into the crockpot with Pork Osso Buco and loads of farm fresh herbs (for my B-Day dinner).🥳 Dan is also making me a berry cake with the last of the strawberries and the first of the BLACK RASPBERRIES!!!🤩 The Fava Beans have just matured as well and will be making their way into some sort of salad with shaved pecorino and fresh mint.😋 This is prime eating for a salty Sicilian like myself!!

The Urbavore fields are about to “pop” with every kind of bloom imaginable!! As we rev up for flower season, I want to remind y’all that we offer some of the brightest, best-priced regenerative blooms in the area - all grown with KC food scraps turned compost!!! In truth, I’m a veggie and livestock producer who has recently become intoxicated with “flower power” and I’ve upped our production ten-fold. I’m a bit new to this game as a “florist” and “designer” which is why my prices are so competitive. Flower growers and florists need to be paid well, but EVERYONE deserves organic blooms for their wedding or special day, and it kills me just how darn expensive it can be!! I’ll work with your budget and provide you with something truly unique with all the quirks of calloused farmer hands and true grit! My bouquets aren’t generic magazine quality - they’re BETTER cuz they are lovingly nurtured from KC soil in the most honest and ethical way with blood and sweat to boot. Please contact me by email at [email protected] with inquiries. “You-pick” options coming soon!! *We also do wholesale by the bucket or stem to other growers/florists!

I’ll be turning 44 on Sunday. I thought all I was going get was peri-menopause and a 12-hour work day, but it turns out I’ll be getting some Purple Moon Cauliflower too!!!🎉🤩‼️ First time growing this stuff, mainly because our heavy clay soils were never good enough to attempt it before. Fertilizing with “KC Food Scraps turned compost” has really paid off!! Now that’s a pretty good B-Day present: the best damn fertilizer in the world and climate action to boot!! Be sure to snag these purple puppies in the online store next week.😉

Beautiful harvests coming in from the fields today!! When you work at Urbavore, you get to learn the ins and outs of growing and harvesting many different types of crops. In the second photo, Farmer Dan instructs an eager and thoughtful Eli on the nuances of harvesting Purple Sprouting Broccoli.😎 This work is not easy and it takes a lot of concentration, focus, and grit to achieve fluidity in the fields. “Newbies” often face a steep learning curve, but if they have the drive and fortitude to stick with it, they will eventually become very knowledgeable growers who can kick some serious ass in the garden!! Knowing how to build soil and grow food without chemicals or commercial fertilizers (as well as very few extractive resources) will likely be one of the MOST IMPORTANT skills a young person could obtain as our fossil fuel-powered systems begin to break down and climate and/or political crisis sweeps the globe…🤔oh yeah…and AI takes all the jobs.😂 Not trying to be dramatic or alarmist by any means…just making a very grounded point that earth work and regenerative food production is CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE!! If you want to support our efforts of growing future growers as well as recycling food waste into more & better food with our sister biz , please place an order at the link in profile by midnight for Thursday evening pick-up on the urban farm!!🙏 Sales are down this year due to the economy I suppose, but our food is a GREAT DEAL especially as grocery store prices sky-rocket. We’ve got bumper crops of countless varieties of veg packed with deep nutrients and far-out flavor!!😋💪♻️🌎 P.S. My strawflowers are about to explode!!!🤩

Okay…so I’ve been avoiding talking about it…but far too many people have been asking “WTF happened to the Urbavore strawberries??!!”🍓 🍓🍓As you know, we normally pump out hundreds and hundreds of pints of the best tasting berries on the planet this time in May!!🤤 We’ve been doing it for many years and it is our claim to fame. NOT this year though.😞 This year, we barely have enough to fulfill our CSA Shares which always get “best pick”. This doesn’t just suck for YOU (the berry addict), it sucks hard for us (the farmers) as we lose considerable income that we count on to stay afloat. Why are there so few berries you ask?🤷‍♀️ Well, it’s a two parter. First, the berry plants were victim to some crazy climate induced weather shenanigans. They started flowering in FEBRUARY for crying out loud. I knew way back then we’d see some serious problems. Second, my well-established berry plots (fields that had been in production for periods of time ranging from 5 to 10 years were mismanaged and overcome with weeds during the 3-year period we spent battling the City and trying to keep the farm afloat. There were A LOT of casualties during that horrid span of years, and we are just lucky to have made it out alive with a piece of land still intact and the home we built for our family.😬 The good news is, even though many perennial fields of strawberries and other crops may have been compromised or lost completely, we’ve diligently been working to replant and re-establish these coveted fruits. Next year should be a REALLY GOOD ONE for 🍓🍓🍓 as I have young beds coming on strong. Even though we don’t have your coveted berries right now, PLEASE support us anyway! We grow an amazing variety of nutrient-dense foods and without year-round support and seasonal eating, we can’t afford to get you those berries 3 weeks out of the year!! 😳😳😳 Yup, they are only around for a short time, but farmers have to survive and sell food 52 weeks out of the year.🤔 Something to chew on, eh?

Behold: the master!!👌 Sol has no shortage of amazing farm fresh ingredients to choose from including an extensive selection of edible flowers!🌺 These Urbavore rolls feature our unctuous ground pork sautéed with garlic scapes, the first of the season’s carrots, red lettuce, mint, cilantro, vermicelli noodles, and some homemade “yum yum” sauce. Flowers are inside and outside cuz why not??!! Sol had recently taken a liking to making these and I have ZERO complaints!🤤
