Puppy training win in Warrensburg: Tucker the Cocker Spaniel learned 'place' this week. Place is the crate without walls — a spot to switch off and settle until released. The key: keep the reps short and make the release word a party. He was climbing on and settling on his own by the end. Smart little guy.

Place training a rescue lab mix in Kansas City: Josie met a brand-new place cot for the first time this week — and when a paw slipped off the edge, she pulled herself right back into position. The key: place is portable calm, not one particular bed. Send her to a cot at home, a bench at the park, a bed at a hotel. Still using a little guidance at Week 3, right where she should be. Good girl, Josie.

Puppy training in Leawood — Ace the Goldendoodle is learning his off switch. He picked up 'down' on a finger point today, but the real win was calm: he settled into the back of his crate on the third try, head down, no fuss. The key: short reps, then real rest. That's where it sticks.
