A very important part of my job is knowing canine body language so well that I can explain it to you, your child, or your teenage son that doesn’t believe you.

This week we’re going to cover body language - we’re starting with a pop quiz!

How is this dog feeling and what about their body language tells you that?

Happy Pride Month! 🌈🐾

This Pride Month, we’re celebrating authenticity, acceptance, and the courage it takes to show up as yourself. Everyone deserves to feel safe, understood, and valued for who they are.

Just as we strive to create spaces where dogs can learn and thrive without fear, we believe people deserve the same kindness, respect, and understanding.

Dogs teach us all sorts of things: kindness, empathy, forgiveness, and the value of seeing individuals for who they are. They don’t judge people based on who they love, the color of their skin, their gender identity, or where they come from. They simply love the people in their lives for being themselves.

Our goal has always been to create a welcoming, inclusive space for both people and their dogs. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.

Happy Pride Month from all of us. 🌈❤️🐾

Yesterday marked Week 3 of Adolescence Class, and Gizmo is blossoming! 🌸

His engagement with his owner has improved so much, and he learned “leave it” in less than 5 minutes. Pretty impressive for a teenage dog! 👏🏼

After just a few minutes of training, Gizmo was able to leave a smelly bully stick alone and he’ll even do it when the kids ask him to!

“Leave it” is one of those skills that can make a huge difference in everyday life. It helps keep dogs safe and can prevent an emergency vet visit if they come across something they shouldn’t eat.

Our next Adolescence Group Class starts June 21st!

Meet Morganne!

Morganne and I have known each other for quite some time, and ever since I met her, she’s been deeply involved in animal rescue and a huge advocate for behavior dogs.

She regularly opens her home to behavioral foster dogs while also managing life with her own three behavior dogs. If you’re dealing with intrahousehold dog-to-dog issues or introducing a new dog into a multi-dog home, Morganne is someone I would absolutely trust to help guide that process. Foster management gives you a ton of real-world dog training experience: your goal is to help those dogs successfully stay in foster homes, and a huge part of that is coaching families through the challenges of adding a new dog to the household.

Morganne is a dedicated dog training professional with over eight years of experience working in animal shelters. Her path into training began in 2016 when she became a foster home manager for a shelter in Atlanta, Georgia. There, she focused on placing and supporting dogs that were struggling in the shelter environment and needed foster homes to succeed.

Her training approach is rooted in compassion, communication, and creating sustainable behavior change. While Morganne enjoys working with all dogs, she has a special soft spot for dogs experiencing “big emotions” like fear, anxiety, and reactivity.

Morganne is constantly learning and expanding her knowledge of canine behavior, but she’ll tell you her biggest teachers have been her own three rescue dogs. She is currently attending the Aggression in Dogs Master Course and plans to sit for her professional certification exam through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers in November 2026.

Come with me to introduce a fearful dog to a couple strangers!

Zeke is a one year old adolescent dog with a bite history: one incident involved a neighbor reaching over the fence, and another happened during an introduction with a man.

For dogs like Zeke, successful introductions happen by setting things up carefully and moving at the dog’s pace.

Zeke especially struggles with people entering his home, so we start outside first and slowly work our way toward becoming “inside the house friends.”

One of my favorite things about many stranger danger dogs is that once you’re in their circle, you’re usually in for life. I hadn’t seen Zeke in months, but at our previous lesson he let me walk right into the house like an old friend.

We did eventually head inside after this session, but the indoor introduction only lasted about five minutes before we ended it.
To a lot of people, Zeke may not have looked uncomfortable but his body language is subtle, and he has a hard time regulating his emotions. Dogs like this can go from 0 to 100 very quickly.

When you learn to spot the smaller signs of discomfort, you can prevent a LOT of growling and biting incidents before they happen.

Real behavior change takes time, but now these people have made a positive, lasting impression on Zeke and that matters quite a bit.

Meet Deb!

I first met Deb at NAWS when she brought her very special Dalmatian, Lupin, to one of my reactivity classes. Watching the relationship between those two is something really special - they navigate the world together beautifully, read each other like a book, and continue to grow together every day.

Deb describes herself as a “dog nerd,” and honestly… it’s the perfect description. 😂 Between the posts, workshops, books, memes, behavior discussions, and excited dog-training debriefs we constantly send each other, it’s safe to say we both genuinely LOVE learning about dogs.

Deb has worked in the pet care world for over 10 years and has an incredible background that combines science, behavior, and hands-on experience. She earned her degree in Feed Science and Management with a minor in Companion Animal Nutrition from Kansas State University and later transitioned into dog training full-time after discovering how passionate she was about helping both dogs and their humans.

She is an IAABC Accredited Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator who specializes in helping dogs with “big feelings” - reactive, fearful, anxious, and overwhelmed dogs who need support learning how to navigate the world safely.

One of my favorite things about Deb is how genuine her passion is. We celebrate each other’s wins, problem solve tough cases together, and completely geek out over behavior topics. Her excitement for dogs, clients, and learning is contagious.

I truly feel so lucky to have Deb as part of the Empawthetic team. 💛

Deb did recently cut off all her hair, so don’t be surprised when she shows up to your in-home lesson without all this blue and purple!
