I was driving at a very low speed, when I noticed two dogs with their owner walking on the sidewalk next to the road. They were off leash. I kept driving, but the dogs started playing in the street right in front of my car. I slammed on my brakes, and the owner yelled at them to get back.

Just because your dog has recall doesn’t mean they can be off leash all the time. Many people say that if your dog has recall, they can be off leash, but that’s not necessarily true. For example, my Boston terrier, Toby, has perfect recall. He comes to me every single time I call his name, but he comes to me slowly. He also likes to sniff, so he can get lost in a scent and walk out into the street. He’s not allowed off leash unless we’re hiking or in a big field.

Please know your dog’s limits and keep them safe. I don’t know what I would have done if I had hit these dogs. Please educate yourself and train your dogs well, or just acclimate them to them. Put a leash on them, put a long line on them, go to a park.

Meet Rosie — the newest member of our dog-sitting crew! 🐾 She’s been an absolute joy to care for this week. I’ve even gotten to bring her to work with me, and she’s stopped by my house to play with my own pups. Can you believe she’s not even a year old? Such a sweet, well-mannered little angel!

Heading out for a trip and feeling nervous about leaving your furry friend? I totally get it — but rest assured, when your pups are with me, they’re not just looked after… they’re loved, entertained, and treated like family. ❤️ Because around here, a happy dog is my full-time job!

Today I got into a discussion with someone who claimed that the only way to train an aggressive dog is through balanced methods like shock or e-collars. When I mentioned that positive reinforcement—backed by real science—can effectively and humanely treat aggression, I was told I was “just regurgitating stuff that doesn’t work.”

Here’s the thing: I’m not just repeating what I’ve heard—I’ve done the research. Organizations like the AVSAB, IAABC, and countless certified behaviorists have published studies showing that aversive tools often increase fear and aggression, especially in already unstable dogs. Studies like Ziv (2017) and Hiby et al. (2004) back up that force-free methods not only work, but create more stable, confident, and well-adjusted dogs over time.

This conversation reminded me how easy it is for people to put blind trust in specific trainers without questioning where their methods come from. Just because someone has followers or calls themselves a “rehabilitator” doesn’t mean their approach is rooted in science—or safe. As trainers, owners, and advocates for dogs, we owe it to them to rely on evidence, not opinions.

Let’s keep pushing for informed, compassionate, and ethical training. The dogs deserve it.
