Happy Vulture Awareness Day! We love to celebrate these fascinating birds that keep the earth clean by eating carcasses that would otherwise spread bacteria.

It’s the perfect day to introduce the Zoo’s newest vulture, Osiris! This 1-year-old Egyptian vulture is currently a brown color, but he’ll turn white when he becomes an adult. His intelligent species has actually been seen using tools like rocks to aid in obtaining food! The Egyptian vulture is native to Africa, Europe, and Asia, and at the Zoo you’ll find Osiris residing with bateleur eagles Lucia and Mr. B in our Africa section.

Vulture populations around the world are declining, with 16 of 23 species (or 70%) listed as Threatened, Endangered, or Critically Endangered. The KCZoo is proud to be a part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program that is committed to the conservation of these amazing animals.

Meet Rizzo, the fabulous floof that will melt your heart! We are thrilled to announce that tawny frogmouth couple Eunice and Toby became parents on July 16 to this precious chick, who was named after the Muppet character Rizzo the Rat.

Eunice and Toby have had a total of four eggs in two clutches this year but unfortunately, three chicks did not survive. The animal care team opted to safely hatch the fourth egg in an incubator, and this charming girl was the result. Upon hatching, Rizzo weighed only half an ounce but has now reached about nine ounces! Her gender was determined by performing DNA analysis of her eggshell's membrane.

Animal care specialists have attended to Rizzo's every need, including a lot of handfeeding. Her diet now consists of crickets, worms, and pinkie mice. Recently, she moved out of the incubator and during her fledging process, will reside in a behind-the-scenes area of the Birds of Australasia aviary. Once Rizzo is able to successfully fly and perch, she will be introduced into the aviary.

The tawny frogmouth species is native to Australia and named for its large, flattened bill and large frog-like gape. These nocturnal birds have the ability to camouflage perfectly into their surroundings.

This Wild Beginnings hatch announcement is sponsored by Saint Luke's Health System and celebrates the Zoo’s newest residents while supporting the same commitment to compassionate women’s and infant care offered to Kansas City families for over 135 years.

Happy World Primate Day! You’ll find a fascinating assortment of monkeys and apes when you visit the Zoo, including the lion-tailed macaque species. We stopped by to watch a training session with 30-year-old macaque Misty and animal care team lead Maddy. Positive reinforcement training serves a variety of purposes, including medical care participation to ensure animals are flourishing year-round.

Native to the rainforests in Southwestern India, lion-tailed macaques live in small, social groups and spend most of their time high in the forest canopy. The species is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to issues like habitat loss and hunting.
