🦎🌎 **Happy World Lizard Day!** 🌎🦎

Today we're celebrating our incredible scaly companions—from bearded dragons and leopard geckos to blue-tongued skinks, chameleons, and more!

Did you know that **many health problems we see in pet lizards are related to husbandry?** The good news is that with the right setup, many of these issues are preventable.

🏠 **The 5 Keys to a Healthy Lizard**

🥗 **Proper Diet**
Every species has different nutritional needs. Feeding an appropriate diet with the correct calcium and vitamin supplementation helps support healthy bones and overall wellness.

🌡️ **Correct Heating**
Lizards rely on external heat to digest food, fight infection, and stay active. Every enclosure should provide a **temperature gradient**, allowing your pet to move between warmer and cooler areas to regulate its body temperature.

💡 **UVB Lighting**
Many lizard species require UVB lighting to produce vitamin D₃, which is essential for calcium absorption. Without adequate UVB exposure, reptiles are at risk for **metabolic bone disease**, a common and potentially serious condition.

💧 **Proper Humidity**
Too much—or too little—humidity can lead to poor sheds, skin problems, dehydration, and respiratory disease. Every species has unique humidity requirements, so be sure your enclosure is set up specifically for your pet.

🌿 **An Appropriate Enclosure**
Adequate space, secure hiding places, climbing or basking opportunities, and species-appropriate enrichment all help reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.

⚠️ **Common health issues we see in pet lizards include:**
• Metabolic bone disease
• Poor shedding (retained shed)
• Respiratory infections
• Parasites
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Burns from improper heat sources
• Dehydration

If your lizard is eating less, becoming lethargic, having difficulty shedding, developing swollen limbs or jaw, breathing with an open mouth, or simply "doesn't seem right," don't wait—early intervention can make a big difference.

🩺 Our team is happy to help keep your scaly family members healthy with wellness exams, husbandry guidance, and medical care.

🍃 **Is your pet constantly scratching? It doesn't have to be that way!** 🐶🐱

August is **Itchy Pet Awareness Month**, and while an occasional scratch is normal, frequent itching, licking, chewing, or recurring ear infections could be signs of an underlying problem.

Common causes of itchy skin include:
🐾 Environmental allergies
🐾 Flea allergies
🐾 Food allergies
🐾 Skin infections
🐾 Parasites like fleas and ticks

The good news? We have options to help your pet feel comfortable again!

💉 **Cytopoint®**
• A monthly injection for dogs that targets the itch caused by allergies.
• Starts working quickly and doesn't require giving pills at home.

💊 **Apoquel®**
• A daily medication that helps relieve itching and inflammation caused by allergic skin disease.
• Often provides fast relief so your dog can get back to enjoying life.

🛡️ **Don't forget flea & tick prevention!**
Even one flea bite can trigger intense itching in pets with flea allergy dermatitis. Keeping your pet on year-round flea and tick prevention is one of the easiest ways to prevent unnecessary discomfort—and it also protects against diseases carried by these parasites.

If your pet has been scratching more than usual, don't assume it's "just allergies." Our team can help determine the cause and recommend the treatment plan that's right for your pet.

📞 Give us a call to schedule an exam and help your pet find relief—because every pet deserves to be comfortable.
