Working alongside his father sparked Jirl's interest in the cattle business at a young age, and years later, he found his way to the Hereford breed through the National Hereford Sale.

The Beef Improvement Federation recognized Colyer Herefords and Angus, Bruneau, Idaho, as the 2026 BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year!

Since 1876, Colyer Herefords and Angus represents a masterclass in balancing multi-generational heritage with cutting-edge genetic progress. Today the fifth, sixth and seventh generations of the Colyer family manage the ranch, which has evolved from a traditional commercial cow-calf operation into one of the nation’s premier seedstock programs.

The Colyer philosophy is built on a “commercial-first” mindset. After a strategic shift in 1992 to focus entirely on seedstock, the family dedicated itself to producing Hereford and Angus genetics that thrive in the rugged western environment. A hallmark of the family’s program is the production of “black baldie” females, leveraging heterosis to improve fertility and longevity for their customers.

The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) named Autauga Farming Company Inc. the 2026 BIF Commercial Producer of the Year!

Rooted in Autaugaville, Ala., Autauga Farming Company has spent more than a century refining one of the Southeast’s most distinguished commercial cow herds. Founded in 1919 and now stewarded by the fourth and fifth generations of the Wendland family, the operation reflects a deep, unwavering commitment to beef improvement.

At the heart of the enterprise is a fall-calving herd of 1,018 breeding females—a closed herd for more than 40 years. By eliminating outside female influence, the Wendlands have built a genetic program precisely tailored to Alabama’s sandy soils and climate. Their three-breed terminal rotation of Angus, Hereford and Charolais is engineered for maximum hybrid vigor and produces calves that excel in maternal traits, feedlot performance and carcass quality.

A summer spent with 🏡

Five college students from across the country recently joined the American Hereford Association for summer internship opportunities focused on communications, youth activities and the National Reference Sire Program.

Carli Doerge, Henderson, Texas; Skyler Ward, New Paris, Ohio; and Gentry Warner, Arapahoe, Neb., joined the AHA May 20 in Kansas City, Mo., for dynamic internships with the communications and youth activities teams. Isabella Hewitt, Sandyston, N.J., and Grace Stott, Redmond, Ore., joined the AHA May 18 and will assist with the day-to-day operations of the NRSP through internships offered in partnership with Olsen Ranches Inc.

We’re excited to welcome these students to Team Hereford and look forward to the impact they will make this summer.

Ty Drach, Cashion, Okla., has joined the American Hereford Association as southwest region field representative. Serving breeders across Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Drach brings a strong background in livestock evaluation and industry relations to the role. With a passion for the beef industry, he will support breeders through Association programs, marketing efforts and industry outreach across the southwest region.
